Clutch Question (Bad Smell)
I have a driveway which is on an upward incline. I usually put the car in reverse and back it up into the garage. As I drive in reverse up the incline, I have the clutch about half way out until I reach the garage. The drive way is about 150 feet long. I have noticed a bad smell coming from the car as I drive backwards, kinda smells with rotten eggs. The car has 700 miles on it, 2SS, M6. Anyone have any ideals what the smell is from. The only time I have noticed it is when I drive backwards up the driveway.

If you are just holding the clutch halfway up and running it up your driveway like that, you are burning up your clutch. You need to release it fully if you are going to drive any distance, especially uphill.

new clutch burning. Once the car gets more broke in it won't happen as often.

Yeah I don't suggest holding the clutch halfway 150 feet worth of backing up...
but that is exactly why its doing that. I've burned mine a few times backing up, but I only have 1400 miles so I still expect it a little.

![]() You are KILLING your clutch! Always fully release clutch the pedal when driving, that is unless you are purposely slipping the clutch to launch at the track. |

The smell of a burning clutch alone should be enough incentive not to let that happen.

Definitely release the clutch once you get going. Thats to long a distance.

Always release the clutch all the way once you are moving... This would be no different than driving around while holding the brakes... Not good for the friction surface on your clutch... You will be replacing it soon if you don't stop that behavior.

slipping a clutch is exactly what it sounds like, the clutch plate is spinning at a lower speed than the flywheel and pressure plate. This creates heat from friction and this creates clutch burn and pressure plate and flywheel damage, and the associated smell. Let the clutch out as soon as you can to prevent clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel friction heat and associated damage-yes this heat can ruin all 3 components
