Catch Can and CAI with oiled filter?
Hello Everyone,
I have an RX Catch can (thanks Tracy) that's been working great and I am also considering buying a CAI but still unsure which one to get. Anyway, reading about the purpose of each of these two devices I thought of this: Is it contradictory to install a CAI that uses an oiled filtration system when one already have a Catch Can? I am not a mechanic but a very curious person Thanks in advance for your advise, Albertog |

Nope, I have the same setup. They are 2 completely different animals my friend. One cleans air coming in( the light mist of oil on the filter never makes it into the engine), other takes oil out of PCV system.

May I ask, do you also have a breather installed? |

No, breathers are not advisable unless you are going high HP and FI. We run a closed PCV system, and a breather would nullify this system, from what I have read anyway

The optional breather is for wide open throttle.

Except the RX breather kit. It has a flow controlling checkvalve integrated into it calibrated for the V6 or the V8 (different for each) and retains the closed system but deletes the point of oil ingestion from the clean side. You guys ARE correct with any other breather as they are just wide open and cause tuning issues with all the unmetered air.

Hello Tracy,
It's been 5 months approx. since I installed the RX Catch Can and Breather combo Question: Does the breather allows oil vapors to escape and is it considered a normal function? I ask this because I notice greasy stuff on some of the areas of my engine bay such as the plastic engine cover |

A very small amount may as with other areas on your engine but as a rule no. Take your cap/breather off and try and blow through it (like fumes would vent). If you can there is an issue, if not all is well.

I like the CAI industries....(PM for pricing) but several others do well also.
Your LLT correct? Vinces Triefecta is easy to do yourself and the $300 sale right now is super inexpensive. |

All right, I did the test and everything seems perfect, I did not feel any air thru the outside of the breather
Thanks for your advise on the CAI, that's the one I was considering but then I read on the specs it uses an oiled filter and that's why I posted this thread Regarding the tunning, my car is L99, 2SS/RS and I thought you may have some friends around the Houston area that owns trustable tuning shops; so far I have tried 2 shops with no luck (one of them did not even returned my call back) |
