ZL1 concerns

Setting aside the brand loyalty for a moment and if you could speak directly to Chevrolet, I'd ask them to respond to the following as reported in Motor Trend Magazine, February 2012 issue.

Ford has announced an all aluminum 5.8 liter supercharged V-8 with 650 horsepower in the 2013 Shelby 500, said to top 200 MPH.
This not only surpasses the ZL1 in HP but also the Corvette ZR1.
It will also bypass the gas guzzler tax, No price was announced.

That's a serious challenge to the ZL1 which will start off at a disadvantage if all this develops. My take on this HP war is it's gotten too rich for me. I stretched for a SS regular Camaro. Be interesting to see how all this plays out.

have to wait until both hit the track to really know how they both perform

This is tired old news. Ford released preliminary numbers for the 2013 GT500 two months ago during the Los Angeles Auto Show, and that horse has been flogged and beaten to death many times on this forum during the last two months. Don't forget that more horse power is only meaningful if it can be translated to usable performance improvements in the real world.

As Al Oppenhieser stated, "The days of 'no replacement for displacement,' are over, and it’s not enough to be fast in a straight line. With the Camaro ZL1, we set out to deliver integrated performance, and be equally good at acceleration, braking, grip, and turning. As you will soon see, that’s why the Camaro ZL1 will set the performance benchmark for the segment."

The car is also programmed to allow a novice driver to maintain better control of the beast; of course, that can be bypassed by flipping switches for RAW performance w/o the built-in safeguards.

Line them up!! I hope just a drag race does not determine the "fastest car" as the technology in the ZL1 in the corners with an IRS and MRC should be a hugh advantage over the Mustink!!

I had my fill of Mustangs back in 1974 with an SVO turbo, the one with that bi-plane rear spoiler. FORD Mustangs seem to be a bunch of components thrown together while the ZL1 is more than just the sum of its parts; it's an integrated package that WORKS! The ONLY FORD that I would consider purchasing is a "used" but not abused FORD GT. Now, that's a sweet machine that was properly thought out. Too bad that they dropped it from production AFTER they finally debugged it.

Should be are the key words. Like someone already posted, let's see where the chips fall when the cars are compared head-to-head under the same conditions/on the same track. One would believe the PTM and MRC would provide a distinct advantage, but the 2013 GT500 comes with some pretty neat technology as well.

One thing seems apparent at this point, the technology in the Mustang is good enough to allow it to escape the dreaded gas guzzler tax while the ZL1, as far as we know to-date, cannot despite making considerably less power at the crank.

I vote this thread should be moved to the other "Oh No, F-word announcement thread."

Are the ZL1's definitely marked up with the gas guzzler tax? When I ordered my car, I asked the gg question and my dealer told me he had no final indication this car would have the gg tax. He called me later with the price but I don't know if the tax was in there or not.

The new gt500 will also offer the track pac on top of the cost of the car. but the ZL1 has everything STANDARD. I would like to see the real world MPG for the new GT500.

I don't think the 650 HP mustang has passed that yet. Just the 2012 with 550 HP or whatever.
