Maybe a new-ish gearing question...

So I was fortunate enough to find my SS when I was 5.0 shopping and I've been pretty happy with it. I've installed the complete JRE 470 kit (cam, dual valve springs, hardened push rods, upgraded trunion, CAI, LT headers, + Cat back Magnaflow 3" with X pipe). So its running pretty good. I'm looking to get the most out of the car for the Texas Mile. I would like to run it this year NA and then next year FI. I'll be adding some Nitto NT05Rs on 18x10 wheels (18x8.5 up front) for take off. What I need is top end.

So the real question. What final drive will give me the HIGHEST TOP SPEED (over 1 mile traveled) AND be friendly to me once I go FI as I don't want to buy 2 sets of gears?

My car is being built for the mile and unlimited open road races. Drag racing is a secondary... distant secondary concern.

When we started planning my build, we talked about gearing and settled on 3.07's.

This gear ratio will slow you down a little bit launching the car right now, but depending on how far you push the forced induction when you go that route, you'll find it to be pretty friendly...

On the dyno week before last, my car went 170+ in 4th gear and we didn't go to the redline due to heat in the dyno bay... it was around 108 F.

Pure drag racing fans like to go with higher gear ratios to get off the line, but there is a point of diminishing returns unless you tub the car and go for bigger tires, spend lots of money on a trans and seriously learn how to consistently drive...

I made 4 passes last week learning to drive the car (launch with slicks) and even with 3.07's on my 4th launch, I spun all the way through first.. I was also trapping at 125-130 in third gear... shift twice and run a 10.92 with a manual car.. my first time out, and the car has a lot more in it... It's faster than the driver right now...

As for street manners, I cruise at 70-75 mph, higher on the local toll roads... 80 mph speed limit, and I'm between 1450 and 1700 rpm, depending on the cruise speed...

If my schedule works out, maybe I'll see you in October at the Mile...

Thanks SSE 4 2SS, that's the kind of information I'm looking for. I kind of assumed that I was going to be aiming for only using 1-4, maybe 5 once I go FI. On the NA side I was looking toward 3.73 or 3.91 to get into using 5 on the mile, but then when I go FI I will be too low. I think the stock 3.45 might be best for the NA run. Then go higher gearing (lower #.##) once I get the blower on.
