Which do you prefer: 1/4 mile or Circuit dominance?
The ZL1 is amazing on a circuit track given its size. GM has achieved a minor miracle getting such a big heavy car to handle the way it does.
But how many of us secretly wished it could trounce the GT500 in the 1/4 mile - enough to trade the ZL1 handling for a superior 1/4 mile time, if it were possible? Hypothetical question: if you could turn back time and be the chief engineer of the ZL1 and trade the ZL1's superior handling (and say go back to "SS" level handling) for superior 1/4 mile performance - would you do it? |

if the ZL1 and the GT500 performance figures were reversed, that is, the shelby was the handler and the chevy was the quarter miler, I would still buy the chevy because it looks so amazing.......design with an attitude

That's fair, but we are restricting the scope of this poll/discussion to just performance, not aesthetics. I think it's clear that most people here would choose the Camaro based on aesthetics. Since aesthetics is so personal, it makes polling on aesthetics worthless in my opinion.
Besides, this poll is "how would you have engineered the ZL1", not "which car do you prefer". |

sorry ........but the truth is the Camaro chassis has minimal potential as a quarter miler......they could have improved it somewhat, but GM had the technology to make it truly shine on the track, not strip.........dont forget, rolling weight is easier to work around once its moving............its weight would have always held it back getting off the line....a quarter horse wont get you into the world class recognition auto tests and i think it was easier to focus on handling than 0-60...........

As a circuit car, you can get the best of both worlds!!

Everyone is forgetting what the "ZL1" moniker represents. That's exactly what GM brought back into existence...the "ZL1". Not a Camaro...not a Z28. It's the ZL1 and they properly built it to perform just as the original ZL1's did and carry on the genetics of the nameplate. If you want a drag strip queen then buy an SS and throw money at it. The ZL1 performs just as its original big brother was designed to do...carve the road course with authority.

How much HP does it take to get the ZL1 to run an 11.8?
Does it just take a pulley change and a some fuel mapping? Hennessey, Red Line, Lingenfelter, Livernois, will one of you tell us what it would take to get a ZL1 to run a mid 11 in the 1/4 mile? Dollars and Horse Power I am not sure who to direct the next question to so if you know the answer let us know. How much money would it take to get a GT500 to out perform a ZL1 around a road course? The $8000 for the optional track packages that Ford offers obviously does not do it based on the reviews so far. I wonder if it is going to be easier for GM to increase HP or for Ford to increase handling in later models. |

I think the Chevy Team got it right on the money with the ZL1. I see today's car trends as not only being powerful but also handling and ride. I kind of hate to say it, but the straight line speed only thing is in the past and consumers expect much more than that now.

I'm trying to make an apples to apples comparison. So let's keep both cars on street tires.

If I want a 1/4 mile car, I just keep adding HP to my SS or get an GT and SCed it. Why waste money on a 64K car when I can get the same job done with SS/GT+15K. Handling is what make the ZL1 different from all of the other pony/muscle cars.
