Another Writer Loves the V6 Camaro

Mark Maynard of the San Diego Union-Tribune got to drive 3 of the four versions. He really loved the V6:

I was most impressed with the 3.6-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic with steering-wheel shift tabs. Get the 2LT with uplevel interior package of Inferno Orange (more red than orange) leather-trimmed seats with door inserts and a line of lighting, which creates a sharp-looking interior. As equipped, that car would carry a sticker of $30,000-plus.

Here are some observations from my first drive.

Acceleration is strong, shift points are good. And, wow, 304-horsepower and 29 mpg on the highway! Sixth gear is a loafer for highway cruising on the manual.

The V-6 has a real dual-exhaust system and runs on regular gas.

The manual gearbox could use refinement. It is difficult to heel-toe shift because pedal heights aren't ideal and downshifts from third to second or from fifth to fourth are coarse and not precise. Both of us missed gears a couple of times. And both of us also jammed it into reverse at traffic lights. But do that a few times and your muscle memory refines your arm movement. (On V-8 manuals, reverse is down and right.)

Definitely consider the optional short-throw Hurst shifter that will be available later in the year.

I liked the sound of the 6.2-liter V-8s, but their power feels less dramatic than the pounce of the V-6.

This car is going to be outstanding.

I remember my old modded na 5.0 (use to trap 109's in the 1/4) felt MUCH faster than my 03 Cobra when it was stock, even though the cobra was in the 111's stock.

The LLT has one of the flattest torque curves of any GM engine or any engine period due to its VVT and +- 50 degrees of individual cam phase. It may not be a terribly torquey engine (273 ft/lbs max), but it makes 80& percent of its torque and holds it from about 2500 rpm all the way to redline.

Your heading is very misleading. If you read the article the author says that he cannot say that he loves the car without driving it more. It sounds like he has quite a few reservations about it. I particularly don't like the comments about how riding in the passenger seat can be nauseating.

agreed, he had some negatives, but i like reading stuff like that because sometimes i feel like they are overrating it

I only saw three. He didn't like the manual transmission on the V6 or the V8. He questioned the rear suspension alignment on the particular car he was driving. And he really didn't like the lack of height adjustment on the passenger seat.

Love was the wrong word, but he was clearly favorably impressed with the V6.

I'm just confused as to how they can (maybe) just now, next week, get to the point of correcting issues with the V6 M6. The V6 M6 has been around in CTF form for almost a year! How can it be that whatever issues they had are just *now* being corrected? This is really disconcerting for me.
