What's reasonable for 2LT 2012 Camaro?

What's up everyone, I am very close to pulling the trigger with purchasing a camaro.

My dealer has a new 2012 2LT V6 White Camaro. It is automatic and has a sunroof.

Tomorrow I have a scheduled test drive on the camaro, and thinking of negotiating with the dealer after the drive. I'm 20 years old, so I don't have the most experience when it comes to purchasing cars, even though I'm purchased a 2003 bmw and a 2004 volvo in the last 2 years; but they were both obviously used. Heck, I didn't even try to negotiate, I just brought them a couple hundred dollars lower than the sticker price.

Using Chevy's quote form, the dealer quoted me sale price of $30,851. He has mentioned that I may qualify for up to $3k in rebates. He hasn't mentioned what they are. He insisted for me to give the car a test drive, and figure out a price.

After the test drive I plan to tell him "If you agree to $26,000 which includes dealer fees, I will drive 5 minutes away and get you the certified check for the full amount. If it's a penny more, I'll take the offer into consideration, leave and let them know in a few weeks if that's the best offer I find."

My question is if $26k sounds reasonable for what this car is. In addition, if my approach might have them pull the trigger and get me in the car.

I'm in the state of NY.

Thank you in advance.

I'd say unreasonable. I did a lot of haggling to get a 2lt MT6 with zero options other than IOM paint for 28,870 after destination but before TTL but also before any rebates. total cost otd came to around 30k? But if you can get it that low good luck to ya! Their cost from GM is around 26.5k I believe... Where abouts in new York are ya from? I can send you to a a dealer who will go the extra mile for you.

Just as a note offering a dealer cash for a new car isn't really a selling point. Honestly they'd rather finance you... I'd keep that to myself until the last minute or he'll most likely try to sell more... Or for more.

I got the GM Employee discount through my grandparents and I only saved around $2500 on a fully loaded 2LT. In 2003 I bought an Avalanche and saved > $8000. Ever since the bankruptcy, the dealer's margins on vehicles has shrunk something horrific. If you want to know what you can accomplish in dealing, check out www.truecar.com

Highly doubt they will go for it. I paid $26,500.00 for my 1LT after tons of haggling, and it was a good deal, so....

Thanks for the responses. It's good to know what the realistic range I should be shooting for. Hopefully in the next couple weeks I'll have pictures of my new camaro to show.

So I went to the dealership. I was given the SS to test drive since apparently the LT's are too far back, behind other cars. Problem with the test drive was that it was only around the block, and the blocks were not only short and filled with stop signs, but there was construction and people walking through the streets. I literally couldn't put my foot on the gas much since there was too much stuff happening around.

What I did notice from being in the car is that the visibility is definitely smaller than going from my current Volvo. The side mirrors are perfectly fine, but looking back while in reverse is almost futile. Lastly, making right turns isn't too great since the middle mirror is blocking half of your vision.

That being said, I still like the car. I was quoted a price of $29,200. This is for a 2LT Camaro w/ Auto Transmission. If I wanted a sunroof, it will add another $700 on to it they said. Once I put down the deposit, and they order it, apparently it should be delivered in 1 weeks time.

I told them that I will think about it over the weekend and get back to them next week. I'll probably call them up next week and offer them $29,500 for the car, but it has to include the sunroof. Judging by the price I'm getting from TrueCar, that would come at under invoice price, which is good by me.

During that phone call I will tell them that I do want to do another test drive, but this time around to take out the 2LT. If I like it, we'll order on the spot.

I got my 2012 2LT AUTO with Sunroof for $29,200 (still need to add advertising fee and taxes to that.)

Another dealership offered:

2LT. Auto. Sunroof. RS Package. = $33,400.

I feel that's pretty expensive.

Woooo!

I went back to that first dealership and asked them for the price of the 2LT w/ Auto w/ Sunroof w/ RS Package. The price that we agreed for and signed for is $31,350. Which I personally think is a great deal. It's $2k less than the other dealership I contacted. This price is also lower than the average on TrueCar.com

I should have the car in hand by Friday!

Update on this thread:

I feel as though the dealer almost pulled a bait and switch tactic on me. After I put down the deposit to have the car allocated to the dealership I receive a call the day after with my sales rep telling me they have to place a factory order. Apparently they couldn't find the car with my exact specifications locally, so it needs to be custom made. This would be fine if he didn't initially tell me that I'll have the car by Friday.

So I'm somewhat pissed at the moment because I feel this might have been done intentionally.

Yeah, so the "too good to be true" turned out to be so :( I think the "bad" dealers love selling these cars because people that want them are passionate about them, it'd be a lot easier to push someone's buttons with it than say a Prius buyer for example.

I'd get away from that dealer completely.

Honestly if I lived anywhere in the NE US I'd be buying from Becky from these forums.
