Thursday was a bad day.
I got home from work Thursday night, in not the greatest of moods. I had a supervisor (who for whatever reason has it out for me), try to write me up on something I had absolutely nothing, zero to do with. So I get home, expecting company, and they were there waiting. I get a shower out of the way, and then my buddy wants to head down to the beer store. He suggests walking (it's about 6 blocks away), but I use any excuse to drive my car so, of course we take Joan. Now I will preface, my driveway sucks. I mean, it really, really sucks. I pull out every day onto a very busy road. But this day, it's not busy. No traffic coming from either direction. I'm always super concious coming out of the driveway, and more so when it's Joan I am driving.
WHAM *my first accident in 12 yrs of driving* Freaking ghost car comes out of no where, after I pull out. I strike his driver side door. The worst part, the driver was a teenage girl, and her passenger was the driver training instructor. The car is a charcoal grey Toyota Yaris. The only thing outside of her speeding I can think of is maybe the car was hard to see due to all the shade, it could have looked somewhat washed out. It's also possible he pulled out from the cross street just 20 feet down from my driveway, after I started to pull out from my driveway. Either way, the way we hit, I will be at fault no matter what. I get over to the shoulder, and obviously I'm upset. I immediately assume he was speeding. My friend says he didn't see anything, but was more focused on me. The instructor said he was in the lane the whole way. Either way, I'm obviously at fault. The only problem I have with buddies explanation of how he saw things going down, is that he just assumed I was waiting for him to pass me before I merged, which is why he didn't bother getting the girl to move the car over to the right lane (my street has 4 lanes, 2 each way). I question him why he wouldn't be teaching her to take a defensive stance there, and his response "it was her lane, why should she have to". I really wanted to lose it on this guy for that comment. Am I at fault? Obviously. But what's ridiculous is that he wouldn't be teaching the girl to do whatever should could (safely) to possibly prevent an accident. Not just assuming you know exactly what I was going to do. Anyway, the damage is minimal. I was barely moving, maybe going 10 km/h. And the impact was almost more a graze, than anything. And most importantly, nodoby was hurt. The Damage... ![]() The great news, the dude at the shop that will be doing the work owns a 2011 SS. I honestly thought buddy was going to hug me, when he saw the damage. But really, the damage isn't THAT bad. And, he's going to do me a few favours, like removing the stupid dealer stamp on the trunk. I definitely feel good knowing another Camaro owner is personally seeing to the work on the car. Add onto that, he's hooking me up with a guy who does stripes that he trusts. So, the nose strip may be coming soon. |

That sucks. I got called on the carpet last year for something with the FAA, and my (then) boss and another ex-employee (coincidence, I'm sure) were the responsible parties. I had no signatures on any paperwork, but of the other two one had signed it, and one opened and re-packed the thing last and was therefore responsible. My boss told the FAA that I did it, and I was on f-ing vacation at the time!
It definitely put my mind elsewhere for a while Glad nobody was hurt in your smashy-smashy

'That's a bummer dude!'-The Dude
I have the 1LT/RS, and had several close calls; one just a couple blocks from my house. I pretty much drive not thinking about, getting into an accident, driving w/o insurance and no speed limits. Otherwise I'd be creeping along like Grandma on a Sunday drive. The MT and brakes give me all the control I need to navigate out of most situations. But, you can never predict what other drivers will do. I drive defensively for the most part, and because the Camaro is very responsive and most of the time I can plan ahead. I usually run the worst case scenario while driving, which has served well. I also have had 30 years of driving, over half of which was in California(they crazy , mon). So I have had the heartache of the first accident in several pristine vehicles. Hope all works out for you! Let us know about the new stripes! |

Glad nobody got hurt, but if I'm understanding this correctly I agree with the instructor, why should she have to move over one lane if she was already on the correct side of the center line?

I read to thread too. Everytime he says he's at fault then he tries to come back with something the other driver should have done. Unless it was pitch black, there has never been a car I didn't see, gray car and its shady? Give me a break.

Nope. He admits it was his fault whether you like it or not or approve of the way he did it. You admit it yourself: he said he's at fault. No amount of rationalization wipes out admission of guilt. Sorry.

Defensive driving. He was not "wrong" to not move. But if you can avoid an accident, you should always do everything you can to do so. It's a point of frustration for myself. He essentially said he could have avoided the possibility of a colision, but decided not to because he wasn't in the wrong. Just not the way I was taught to drive, and I think a poor way to teach future drivers.
