V6 traded to V8 extra gas usage?

I was wondering for anyone who's traded up from a V6 to the SS, what the change in fuel usage really was (average real world numbers). And how often did you have to fuel up in each driving normally in your daily commute?

Traded my V6 to a V8 SS. Yes gas usage has gone up and now gas prices are up. Sucks yes but if you want to play you gotta pay. Avereage #'s ? Don't know and probably don't want to know either. I'd say if your that concerned about it don't get the SS.

Its definitely a noticeable change. 06_warrior said it best if you want to play, you gotta pay. I have a second car that helps me offset the cost of gas, so thats what I would recommend. I would guess around a 35% increase in cost per month if you are driving it daily.

Depends on how you drive. I was getting 29 or in my v6. I drive almost all interstate and was pretty conservative driving running 65 with the cruise on. Same drive in the v8 and I get just under 25 between fill ups. I have an 82 mile round trip drive each day and make it Sunday to Friday on the tank putting in a few bucks on Friday before my drive home to get me through the weekend. Weekends my driving is limited but I tend to drive it pretty agressive.

The gas mileage isn't awesome, but it's not terrible unless I drive it really hard. To be honest, my V6 wasn't getting THAT great of mileage either. To me, it's worth the MPG hit. FWIW, my DIC is showing about 15 mpg right now, but who knows how accurate that is, and I do mostly city driving. Also, I didn't reset it since the last time at the track, so I'm sure that lowered my avg. quite a bit =)

a 5 mpg hit seems about right combined with a jump from 87 to 93....

My V6 got 15 city...that's all I drive. Very low speeds, average speed was 22mph.

My SS says it gets the same, but I have noticed a difference. However, if I dont hammer on it then it does ok...not as good as the V6 but close, and the V6 did not impress me...never got even in the ballpark of what GM claimed it would.

Price per tank went up, but only a buck or two...nothing that's a deal breaker, at least for me.

My smiles per mile is WAY up, so it was worth it to me.

It's usually better to look at it as a whole picture...

16-20mpg is a good estimate for SS driving, if you've got a relatively good mix of city/highway driving. Expect more like 14-16 if you're dogging it in the city all the time.

The SS's also should be drinking premium fuel, versus the V6 which is rated and tuned for regular 87 octane fuel.

If you drive 1500 miles/month...and you get an average of 16mpg in the SS, and an average of 20mpg in the V6....and gas prices are average $3.80 for regular and $4.00 for premium....

SS: 1500miles / 16mpg * $4.00 = $375/month fuel bill.
V6: 1500miles / 20mpg * $3.80 = $285/month fuel bill.

Plug in your own estimates and scenarios. If you drive less, or gas is cheaper, or you think the MPG estimates are optimistic, feel free to plug your own in.

The SS also takes 8 quarts of synthetic for an oil change, so regular maintenance costs are slightly higher. Pirelli P-zero tires are somewhere around $250/each. Not sure what the V6/LT tires run, but you can only reasonably expect ~20,000 miles out of them depending on how you drive.

I average around 20mpg with my SS, but it doesn't get driven much in regular commuting, so it's kind of a special case. I usually fill it up with around ~13 gallons...once the gas gauge hits the 1/4 mark, stopping for gas is suddenly on the agenda. Usually happens around 260-280 miles.

I hope that helps.

when I had the 6, I filled my tank every 5 days. Now I have the SS, it's every 3 days
