Tire Blows Up (what if?)
I didn't know where to post this so moderators can move it where appropriate.
I was just about to pass a super duty pick-up pulling a horse trailer when its left rear tire exploded. The sound was as loud as a low exploding professional aerial. The tread blew out sideways, sailed over the lane I was in, and landed on the left shoulder. My wife was seconds away from having this happen right next to her window. Being that her window was up, would she have been safe anyway? I shudder to imagine what could have happen if her window was down. |

Yep, that happens.
That is the reason you don't spend any time riding along side those big rigs. They lose their re-treads all the time. Now imagine being beside one on a motorcycle. When I come up on a trailer, I don't get beside it unless I can get all the way around it pretty quick.

Personal trailers are the worst. Most people don't change their tires every five years or so regardless of wear. Those things rot from the inside out and you can't tell they are bad.

I just got in a motorcycle accident and I'm hypersensitive to all that atm, I don't even want to think about it.

Mythbusters tested this. They shot a retread through a windshirld at 45mph. It decapitated the human analog inside the car...

The Mythbusters did something like that with a big rig tire and it can cause massive damage. It scares me to be next to an 18-wheeler at highway speed...

Yeah, I've been behind a big rig right as it had a blowout. It's pretty scary and definitely not fun.

I don't remember if it was busted or not, but I think they put the tire almost directly next to the window to show the affects if it were to happen. Scary though. I'm surprised you don't see more accidents from people swerving when it happens since I know people have to either swerve or just drive through it.

I must have been unclear . . . it wasn't a semi nor was it the horse trailer. It was the rear tire of a Ram 2500 or 3500 (a newer one, too). The driver didn't swerve and I didn't see brake lights. I shudder to imagine what could have happened.
