Unhappy V8 LS3 GAS

So ive read over and over through the V8 Fuse Pull thread here on Camaro5. Some say it works, some say it doesnt. Ive done it and didnt notice anything. Does it only affect the L99? I have the LS3 so is it that? Anyways, even if it does work, how are us California Camaro guys with the V8's supposed to keep our Camaro running on the highest octane map (93) when Commifornia only sells 91 octane?

Does the manual say the high octane map is for 93? I have done the fuse pull a couple times in my LS3 and noticed the second time around. I know a few others with LS3's have noticed a difference. I think the map is set for different octanes, get a tune and you won't have to worry about it.

Here is what i saw in the owners manual:
If the vehicle has the 6.2L V8 engine
(VIN Code W) or the 6.2L V8 engine
(VIN Code J), use premium
unleaded gasoline with a posted
octane rating of 91 or higher.

For best performance, use premium [READ this line guys...]
unleaded gasoline with a posted
octane rating of 93. You can also
use regular unleaded gasoline
rated at 87 octane or higher, but
the vehicle's acceleration could be
slightly reduced, and a slight audible
knocking noise, commonly referred
to as spark knock, might be heard.
If the octane rating is less than 87,
a heavy knocking noise might be
heard when driving. If this occurs,
use a gasoline rated at 87 octane
or higher as soon as possible.

So i just assumed it was 93 since that is what gives you the best performance. I just dont want the "slower acceleration". But is there really a difference?... or is it just my butt dyno and my mind throwing things off?

A few of my cars have had the "only use 93". Use 91 and no worries, it's standard for the US as allot of states don't have 93

ok cool thanks!

As for the tune, do you mean a handheld tune or go to an actual shop for a dyno tune? What are your thoughts of both? What have you done? haha i ask a lot of questions

I would go to a shop and have it done while on a dyno. As for me just intake and exhaust, I need my warranty. Go to the bs thread and ask away.

I've been all over that fuse-pull thread....A few things I've come to believe/learn...lol....If you are basically stock, and have a manual, a tune probably isn't necessary...tunes are great for automatics (L99) and those that have changed headers or other serious modifications....

Pulling the fuses actually sets the timing higher than what is needed for 93...as we get 91 only, the timing slowly gets pulled down to the correct octane...
Under certain conditions, the octane table may even drop lower, from bad gas...lugging the motor...driving like a grandma...

That's the problem, it will not go the other direction (higher) for higher octane, once it goes down to a lower octane setting...

Agreed, save the tune for when you add some mods to it. For reference, here is my experience with dyno tuning at Haddad Motorsports:

I have a L99 and have pulled the fuse every 6ish months in the past 3 years. I get the audible knocking noise and the fuse pull makes it go away. To be honest I do not notice any better performance but I do notice the knocks go away.

Also with my experiences the fuel mileage goes way down for a few weeks after a fuse pull as well. I do not know if it is because I am harder on the pedal looking for that increased performance or not. hehe

Does sound kinda wierd...seems like the audible knocking should only come from too low of an octane...(maybe try another brand or gas station)....
I've heard some of the L99's have had noises from the set-up of the lifters and what-not that's used for the AFM...dunno...You may be a good candidate for a tune!...lol

And for sure mileage would go down after a fuse pull and a little "extra-pedal"...lol

If you never filled up with 87 then you wouldn't notice a difference since it never switched to the lower table.
