Problems getting gas pump to lock

I haven't seen this anywhere else, so here goes.

Every time I try to fill up my car, the gas pump handle will not stay locked. I have to physically hold the handle in the right position to get it to fill...

I noticed there is no metal 'flap' over the hole to the tank, is this normal?

Thanks!

I have the same issues when I pump gas. I have to hold the nozzle as well! Irritating.

I see a lot of people who complain about this problem, but i honestly don't have this problem...only time i have to hold it is when the pump doesn't have the locking mechanism.

Yep same problem here. Older pumps work fine. Its the newer ones with the rubber boot protector thing that cause problems.

In California it's the damn pumps and I'm sure it's the same problem in some other states. I know in Arizona it will fill without holding it, it's annoying but oh well. That's what the wife is for

WOW! just WOW! Life's hard ain't it. In the rest of the civilised world, it's illegal to have fuel pumps that don't shut off if they are not held. It's not a great idea to be able to leave flammable liquid pouring out wthout being attended is it?

I still stand there, I just don't like having to hold it up. I have a fear of the stop not working and it overflowing on to my car anyways :(
