Question Thinking of new camaro, send old one to crusher?

So they are talking about this law. If you can gain a 10mpg difference on a new car you get up to $4500 plus what the car is worth for a trade in. They take the trade in to the crusher as part of the law.

I have a 91' RS 305 with a bunch of miles on it. It's running but not well... Gets < 19 MPG on fueleconomy.gov. I got a ton of good memories in that car and I don't know if I want to see it crushed...

I'm driving a 97 as a daily driver, its in fine condition, so I dont NEED the 91.

What would you do? Keep your old beat up camaro with hopes of someday fixing it, or send it to the crusher for a v6 2010?

No Camaro deserves to fall victim to the "cash for clunkers" program. Did you know that they can't even legally part out the car as salvage once they buy it from you? Don't do it!

Try to find a buyer for it instead would be a shame to see it gone for good :(

They can still part out most of the car.

Q: What does the dealer do with my trade-in?

A: Gives it to a salvage operator. The engine, transmission and some other parts must be destroyed so they can't be reused. The idea is to cull fuel-thirsty, polluting drivetrains. Operators can resell other parts, however.

I disagree. If you can sell it for more than what you'd get by doing this, then sure, go for it. But if you end up getting more money by trading it up, then I say why not? It's not like you're killing a puppy or a baby... it's a car, and I'd think you definitely got your use out of it

As a third-gen lover, I would really hate to see any fall victim to this. They're not making any more of them...

I was wondering myself if they would take my blazer for an LS.

Pulls lever....

I don't think it's right what the gov is doing with this program. Why would I take the money? Sick and tired of fighting against the system.

How well does it run? Be very honest. How cheap can you make it? You might have a buyer if the stats are right.

Couple of corrections to what you posted...

First - You don't get the $3500 or $4500 PLUS trade-in value of the car. You get either $3500 or $4500, period.

Second - You will only get $3500 for the car in this case because the difference between a 2010 V6 Automatic's combined MPG and your '91 is only 4mpg.

Also, (unless the final bill signed into law changes) you will only be able to use the $3500 from your '91 towards a 2010 Camaro with a v6 and the auto transmission. That is the only model that meets the current "new car must get 22mpg combined value on the window sticker" requirement.

Now, is it worth it to send your '91 to the crusher in exchange for the $3500? Only you can decide if you need the $3500 towards your new Camaro or if you'd rather sell the '91 to someone for less just to know it wasn't you that sent it to the crusher.

if you can sell it for more do it, if not crush it. i would only say don't if it had sentimental value.

As a car hobbiest I wouldn't crush any american car. Here in Cali thats all they want to do is crush cars. It's all for new tax money. They even tried to pass a bill to upgrade the smog law to effect my 65 Vette. SELL IT OR TRADE IT
