2012 V-6 Cooling Fan On/Off Temps
It's been a long time coming, but I can finally run most of the day here in Phoenix without having the a/c on. Just for kicks, I left the DIC on "coolant temperature" and was kind of shocked at what I discovered.
When the a/c runs, which is pretty much all the time since I bought it at the end of April, the cooling fan turns on at 190 and off at 180. Without the a/c, the temp gets up to 220 before it even turns the fans on LOW, and it shuts off at 210. I thought this would be considered high, but the temp gauge doesn't even get to half and the upper radiator hose isn't even firm. Has anyone else noticed this? John B.

Normal is what I was told, also. Interesting that it lets it get so much hotter when the a/c isn't in use.

These newer cars run a lot hotter, don't sweat it you're fine.

220°F is not really that hot for a modern car/cooling system.
With the proper coolant mix, and pressure cap the coolant boiling point is close to 260°F. The fans in my Corvette don't kick on until 228°F It will sit in traffic and idle all day long at that temp without any issues.

Wild stuff. I'd seen other posts with similar concerns, but I really never got much of a chance to run my car without the air on and just figured my car ran pretty cool. Every time I checked it, it had the air on, and every time I would stop in a parking lot to smoke, it would idle and kick the fans on high, temp staying below 190, even in 115 ambient.
With a lower ambient and a higher indicated temp, I can only hope for better mpg numbers on my out of town work trips. Every little bit helps when you're just chewing up the miles. John B. |

It kicks on earlier with the A/C on due to the programming matrix. This is to keep the A/C condenser cooler, by bringing fresh air thru the coils, giving a denser mixture of freon to keep your A/C temps in the car cooler.

It'll run cooler with the A/C on because the fans are running more than without the A/C
