I love my new ZL1 but I've nowhere to go...

To me a car is either daily driver transportation or my pride and joy. When I was younger and could only afford one car, it had to be both. Now I have my 1987 Fiero GT (factory ordered by me in 1986 and just turned 60K miles on the odometer last week) as my daily driver, and four "hobby" cars. All four were ordered by me exactly as I wanted them. They are as follows:

1996 Mustang SVT Cobra in color-shifting mystic paint (7 miles)
2001 Mustang SVT Cobra in mineral grey metallic paint (55 miles)
2008 Mustang Shelby GT500 in torch red with black stripes (9 miles)
2013 Camaro ZL1 in Inferno Orange metallic with ECF (8 miles) picked up 4/25

I could never drive any of the four somewhere and leave it parked while I went off and did something. If I ever drive one of them it will have to be to take it to a car show or cruise night and stay with the car. I haven't done that yet because I've kind of been waiting until they will stand out more at car shows. (I figure anybody could buy a brand new GT500 or ZL1 and display it bone stock at a car show the very next weekend.)

Maybe this summer I'll switch the 2001 Cobra (with 2003 factory Mach1 shaker hood added) from comprehensive only to full insurance and go to a few cruise nights. The gold metallics in the dark silver paint look great in sunlight. And mine is one of only 55 mineral grey Cobras that have the spectacular 2-tone medium parchment interior (all the others have the plainer dark charcoal interior). Or else I'll just continue to wait a while more.

I am the same way about my car, but its no where near a ZL1 or those other spectacular cars you mentioned. When I have no where to go, I just go cruise the coast!

I know you don't have a coast in Illinois, I am from Chicago myself, but you could just head to southern Illinois and just be one with you and your ZL1. There are lots of awesome spots down near the southern end of the state just to see and drive. Good luck trying to find something to do with your awesome car!

I always try to park far from the crowd, I like to walk, but someone is always pulling up to it to take a picture or just checking it out. Luckily most people are lazy and won't park next to me cause they don't want to walk that far, and its never really all that far. Thank goodness for all the lazybones.

Haha, this reminds of the time I went to the local car show. It started at 8am, so I left house early 'cause I had to stop at Wal-Mart to get an umbrella chair. I parked way out there, like too far for anyone to park even remotely close to me. When I come out, in all the empty parking lot, this little beater car parked right behind me. SMH.

No payments. My method has been to save up for years first then factory order and pay in full in cash (actually by personal check). The intervals between model years of my four cars show you it has taken at least 5 years to save up for each car. My wife's current daily driver is her 2013 Mustang GT premium (best factory Mustang you can get with an automatic transmission) in deep impact blue metallic which was also paid in full - no payments.

Don't take this personal, but I think it's a little wacko to buy cars just to sit on and not enjoy. Sell the damn things, or drive them. seems there is a little OCD or some other disorders at play.

I agree with Slingshot! If your looking for an "investment" then a car is the wrong purchase, a brand new car for an "investment" is absolutely the wrong purchase. You have some awesome rides, enjoy them!

+1
whats the point if you cant drive it.

most of the winners at this years Super Chevy and Corvette show in Houston were all cars that drove there and drove out.

And all are driven heavily and also cared for just as heavily.

a nice "show" car can be driven even daily if properly cared for.
Stock those cars are all snorefests anyway people want to see mods and fast cars that are driven and look as fast as they are.

Now classics are a different story stock is better and will always attract more attention.
but the drive it point is still valid.

nothing worse than a garage queen.

Some people are into possessing things. I say live & let live if that's what you enjoy, but for me, driving the beast is what creates the Ultragrin.

we all enjoy our hobby in our own particular way. Different Strokes for Different Folks. I myself am a bit cautious when it comes to parking my Z but I couldn't see it in the garage 24-7 driving it, to me, is pure bliss.

Have to agree with some of the above. Might as well bought some framed art work and hung it on the walls. I don't get the whole "buy it and never drive it" mentality. We all work hard for our $ and my hard work isn't going to collect dust in a garage.

Having said that however it's your $ and you are entitled to spend it any way you please so if you enjoy it then that's what matters.

What makes you happy, driving a car and being out on the road or having it sit in a garage just as the day it rolled off the assembly line? Guess what, some people will go one way, others another.

Allow me to vent. My buddy was always getting on to me about driving my ZL1 like an old lady. Then I finally realized, how he drives means that his 2000 Z28 is parked outside another buddys house in the street and basically doesn't run and it is literally falling apart. So I drive how I want to, sure I get on it sometimes, just not every time like I'm trying to tear it up. I've taken mine to the track, run an 1/8th mile six times. I'll go back and run more, but I choose to over all not make an effort to have this car fall apart at 60k miles.

"To thine own self be true." Words from long ago best translate into the contemporary "Do what feels good brother."
