Shifter length

2014 1le.

Can the length of the shift "stick" (shaft) be replaced to be longer,
so that the knob sits higher. I just wanted to replace or extend the stick, not change out the entire shifter.

Don't think so. Hurst makes a higher/longer stick but you need to replace the stock shifter with a Hurst short shifter.

How much longer?

Seems to me you could drill an appropriate diameter x length of solid stock and tap it to suit the existing threads that the OE knob screws down onto. Drill and tap the other end for a short length of threaded rod (same thread) to go between the extension piece and the knob. Locktite the threaded rod into the extension piece, and use a thin locknut under the knob so you can get the shift pattern oriented correctly.

My uncle - a machinist by trade - did pretty much the above for the Corvair he once owned. But it's not such a difficult job that you'd need full machine shop capability (a drill press would be nice, though).

The Hurst short shifter is 6" , the longer Hurst stick shown in the link is 10" which is a 4" difference. Hurst also makes an 8" stick.

As stated, the Hurst sits a bit higher and leans back a bit.
I put a Hurst on both of my camaros and love the shifter position, the short throw is also badass.. It completely changes the feel of driving the car.

After I did the Hurst on my 2015 1LE, I left the stock knob on for a while, but I'm tall and have to lean the seat back to not hit the headliner, the stock shifter position was just a bit too far forward for me.
The Hurst solved that problem.
Best $150 you'll spend on your car.
