Getting wax out of stripes :( - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

So I know the proper procedure for waxing my striped car is to wax parallel to the stripes and this method works great....

I recently had a small door ding taken care of by a shop, who then as a courtesy completely detailed my car as well for free. While I REALLY appreciate the free detial job (that they normally charge $150 for) the guy who applied the wax apparently had no clue about waxing stripes and now I have a nice white border around the CGM stripes on my black car... You can see the dilemma here.

I washed it once and scrubbed around the stripes but to little improvement. Now its been a few weeks as I have been super busy, but does anyone have any reccomendations that wont

a) risk scratching the paint
b) damage the stripes
c) if possible not strip all the wax off (although thats not such a big deal cause I can just re-wax it but I would like to not create extra work if I don't have to).

Otehrwise they did an awesome job, maybe I just need to teach their detail guy about stripes....

I've used those soft, plastic putty knifes you can get from a home store with success before. Still need to be gentle with them though.

Hold it completely vertical to the surface, and run the flat edge of the
plastic blade along the stripe edge, wiping it off often.

Use a toothpick at a slight angle with very light pressure. Will work with no damage.

I've had the same problem and haven't really found anything that works really well so I've opted to have them removed and painted back. I've read where the price varies but for me after checking locally, the $850 cost and smooth with no edges is worth it. That and my wife wants a little different color stripe which gave me the ok to go with it!

I don't get wax buildup when its waxed properly, the problem is someone other than myself waxed it and now I have to correct this condition.

Zaino will not fix it. It needs to be fixed in the first place before I even consider Zaino. And honestly, I'm never going to, I have a hard enough time finding 2 hours to polish and wax the car let alone a whole day to apply that stuff.

Painting them? No thats not a solution either. The vinyl looks great, the stripes looked great up until someone waxed them wrong. They will look great once I correct this issue.

Thanks to everyone else for your suggestions, I will give it a shot.

Have you thought about taking it back and having them fix their mistake so that way if any scratches are made on the car or stripes they are liable?

PM Black67 (Mike) - he just went through the same thing with his black stripes. He got it all off but it was no easy job.

I'd bring it back and make them fix it, but they did this service for free, and as well they charged me less than half price ($100) to fix a dent in the door cause I knew one of the guys that works there. As much as I dislike it, based upon their good nature and the fact this isn't really 'damage' per say, I'm not gonna complain to them about it. A body shop thats not gonna rip you off in NY is worth its weight in gold (that and a place that will give you shady state inspections). Next time (although hopefully there never is one) I will just say no thanks on the wax job.

I've used a new soft bristle toothbrush and detail spray to get wax residue off safely. Dawn and toothbrush would do the trick too. Then show her some love with some wax done the correct way.

I just used a microfiber towel with some distilled water sprayed on, then ran my fingernail along the edge of the stripes (obviously with the towel between my finger and the car.

It worked pretty well. I could see a soft bristle toothbrush working pretty effectively too.
