Exhaust Leak???

I have had a Magnaflow exhaust on my SS for about 14 months.. But now I notice a strong smell when I start it up coming from the exhaust.. It's so strong that when I start it up in the garage it sets off the fire alarm in the kitchen.. I'm guessing it's triggering the carbon-monoxide sensor on the alarm.. It never use to do this before.. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated!!

I think something is rubbing against the exhaust some where. Like plastic or rubber, dripping oil or any fluid like brake/clutch fluid on the manifolds.

What kind of smell is it, you don't specify in your posting. Do you have headers on it, Cats?

If its all exhaust smell then you definitely have a leak some ware. does it still stink at a stop light. last question is, do you have any smoke coming out of your tailpipes or at high rpm?

It's definitely an exhaust smell.. No smoke, except when I first started it up after sitting for almost two months over the winter.. I can smell it when I hit high RPMs..thanks..oh I don't have cats or headers..

is the oil when you first start it up common for your car? and can you visibly see the smoke in the rear view mirror under load at high rpm and is a short burst of smoke or a steady draft......i ask because if you just started burning oil then thats a flag....if you have a steady draft of smoke at load at high rpm not a draft...thats a flag

if all of that is a non issue then you certainly have an exhaust leek...check your welds and or clamps on your exhaust..most likely thats whats happened...your clamps have come loose or loosened...possible you even have a hole in it some ware.

hope that helps

So here is my question.

If you have an exhaust leak... the same amount of exhaust is escaping your car. The only difference is it before the cats? Before the muffler?

But regardless, the same quantity of exhaust. So the smoke alarm should've been triggered at the start of you parking the car in your garage. Unless of course it is running richer now, perhaps a tune?

So ruling out exhaust, perhaps something is burning against the pipe?

if your leaking enough exhaust to set off alarms in your house, first thing I'd do is stop parking in the garage, and the second thing I'd do is take it somewhere and get it checked out. you might be over your head.

Once again, same amount of exhaust from the tips or the manifold...

sorry i just realize what F-16 is saying lol

the only exception is if his smoke alarms are carbon monoxide detectors and while the same thing about the quanitity of exaust coming out if the tips that would be not true if the leak was before the cats...while you still get a reduction in emmissions, its much less out of your tips VS whats going into your cats

Gonna get the car on the lift.. I think I don't have to do emissions here in GA until 2015 on my car.. I think, not sure..
