True Car - Wolf in Sheep's Clothing?

I just wanted to see what people think about Truecar.com

I have seen some say they use it as a buying tool, but I have a feeling this company is nothing but a wolf in sheep's clothing to the consumer.

I wanted to know more about this company and the founder.

Here is an interesting article from Forbes. It's a couple years old, but like many companies it takes a few years to take off, and I think people are now really starting to use them.

The most intersting point I have found is Truecar.com paying a $299 spiff for each lead...

I would love to hear a discussion around this.

Finding invoice costs on cars really isn't that hard, you don't even really need to use Truecar, just find the invoice cost of the new car you want to buy, and work with the numbers there. My project car I currently have now I bought for $100 over invoice cost (so $100 over the cost of what the dealer paid for the car to have it in their inventory), you just need to know how to work the numbers and speak the terminology, so you don't really need Truecar, especially after that article.

My credit union offers a buyer referral service which uses True Car. The credit union offers a preferred finance rate provided you use the service. Bought my Camaro SS and just bought a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited using the service. Dealer was not able to meet or beat the finance rate I got through Pen Fed Credit Union.

I use Edmunds to find the invoice value of the car + options. If you don't have an easy way to get a discount (several companies have deals with GM/Chrysler/Ford for their employees) you can become a Costco member and get their preferred price.
