Any ideas ?--- Please
I installed a set of front rock guards on my ZL1. I got them from Phastek Performance. There where no directions which was disappointing. So I winged it and looked at the photos online. I used the 2 existing screws along with 3M tape. I wanted to use the 3M tape to get a good seal between the guard and the car, but was concerned that the tape over time would give way and with my luck, it would happen when I was on the highway. So I also used the clips that came with the guards. It was a little challenging getting the clips over the guard and the 3M tape, but it did work. The photos online showed the flat side of the clips on the guard and the side of the clips with the indent on the fender lip so thats what I did. After doing this I have thought about it, and have realized I have 2 problems... one is the black inner lining of my wheel well has been pushed up a bit and no longer fits flush, and the clips most likely gauged or scratched the paint on the inner side of the lip of my fender. So now I want to remove the clips and fix anything that may have been scratched, but i can't think of how I can get the clips out without causing more damage to the paint. Those clips where most likely designed to give a little on the way in and bite down and grab on the way out. Any ideas on how to get them out with out hurting the paint more?

I removed the rock guard first by removing the 2 bottom screws and then sliding the guard out sideways from inside the clips. After the guard was removed, the clips simply fell off as they were no longer so tight from clamping both the fender lip and the guard.
I see many people adding tape to the rock guard to "keep little rocks and debris from getting between the guard and the fender". The tape has a little added thickness and will make the clips even tighter because of it. And my guards haven't collect anything between them and the fender without any added tape. By using tape and with the clip issue as posted by you, the guards would be basically stuck on the car and impossible to remove without scratching the paint. They also need to be removed to remove the inner fender which I have now done twice for mods. KISS In your case I would try and cut the clip with some "tin snips" on the back side and then remove the tape and repair any paint damage. Then order new clips and install again without the tape for easy removal in the future if needed. |
