"New" 2013 ZL1
So I've been lurking around here for awhile searching for a new ZL1. I walked away from a deal a couple weeks ago when finance tried to "extort" me into buying the extended warranty by playing games with the interest rate. Anyway I have found a new 2013 in the color and options I'm looking for but I have some concerns and thought I would ask for others opinions on this car. Basically they are selling to me for $9k off msrp (61,570 msrp), the car has 140 miles on it and it's been at their lot for 18 mos. The car is 700 miles away so I can't just drop by and see it. Their story is they're in a small town and sell mostly 4x4 trucks and had a manager that thought this ZL would be a good thing to have. My concerns are, as I have found here on the forum potential supercharger rattle, how the car was driven those 140 miles, and sitting outside in the weather for 1 1/2 years. I have told them I am very picky so water spots would be a problem which they tell me their detail guy will take care of. They also told me most of the miles are from a couple test drives and the occasional drives just to keep the fluids moving. They are located on a main highway so it's a little bit of a drive to the next exit. They've offered a great rate for financing and now are finding out about the key issue and how to fix it. I thought it was odd they didn't mention this when we started talking as all of the local dealerships have said something from the first conversation, so maybe they are a little out of touch in this small town. This car would not be my daily driver just for fun but I'm not real excited about the first drive being 700 miles home. I have a car hauler but again not too excited to spend 2 days driving with the chance I may come home empty. Now just to confuse things I have found a used 2013 which is not my first color choice but has most of my options and the previous owner took great care of, even trailered it to the dealer when he traded it in because it was raining, it has 1600 miles and is about $5k less but has 1 yr less factory warranty on it. This car is only about a 2 hr drive and I have a business meeting next week that is only 30 miles away. So your opinions please and anything I may have overlooked??

My opinion? Ask someone on here in the area where the car is to go and look at it for you. I know I would if it were near me.
I wouldn't worry about water spots. I'm sure they will detail it. Worst case, you get it, it's not super clean, you get back and get it all detailed/buffed. It'll look new no problem. BUT....it's still a new car and if there's anything wrong with it, it WILL be covered under warranty and you can get it fixed back at your local dealer. Now...don't forget that there's a 2k off deal going right now or 0% financing (not sure on the months). You can also get a $1k private offer off the total price or a specific bank/credit union discount depending on your bank. |

Here's my two cents in no particular order:
The price is good, but I bet you could get another $1,500 off that. I wouldn't worry about what happened on the first 160 miles. There's only so much damage one can do on a test drive with the salesman in the car (assuming they don't let a $60k car out on a test drive alone) I'd be a little concerned about the paint, but it's very likely not anything that can't be corrected. I'd use it as a point of negotiation. My concern is that it's been shined up often and has swirls marks. Those can be taken out, but that takes time and patience AND skill. I'd take the new one over the used one. Not even a question in my mind. Get EXACTLY what you want when you are spending his much on a car. Don't have ANY regrets. Be sure you are prepared to walk away. When you come that far, they will feel like you NEED to buy the car. Make it clear you will walk away without a great deal. There's plenty o fish in the sea.... Ya know? +1 on having someone go by and look for you. I'm sure a fellow C5 freak would do that for you. I would if I lived close. +1 on the private offer and be sure to contact Brad on this site about his GM Card deal. You could save another $500 that way. Please post pics and good luck! |

I would take the above advice about knocking another $1500 off the price of the new one. I just got a quote from pro to do a paint correction on my new black 2014. $1200 to make it show car quality and another $400 to put CQuartz Finest on it. He and his sister will spend two to three days on my car making it absolutely perfect.
http://www.cqfinest.com/ The key fix is separating the key from the remote. It looks cheesy as hell. There is also some seat belt piece my dealer said they had to do before I could take delivery. For the blower there is a TSB to replace the isolator with a solid one from a 2014+ model. Only if it gets noisy. I wouldn't worry about the miles on the car. I always break in my new cars by doing a couple of heat cycles and taking them to redline right off the bat. Just put down 511/500 with the only mods being a Rotofab and catless JBA mids. 97.4F and 32% humidity when I dyno'd it a couple days ago.

Thanks for the replies. I thought the same on the pricing which is what I offered but they say they're losing money at this price already, although one of the salesmen told me they are getting money from GM to cover their loss. I've heard it from several dealers that they don't make much on these cars to start with. Does it look like the shipping blocks are still in the front of this car it seems to be sitting high? When I talked to them it was like they didn't know what I was talking about on these blocks being in the springs, I really think they don't have a clue about this car. It's missing the wind deflectors that should be under the front also.

Yeah, it looks like the spring deals are still installed. The wind deflectors are probably in the truck.
