Track Day Video Question

I have done a few track days now and the ZL1 is just too much fun on the track. When I look on YouTube at other peoples track day videos, mine are lacking. I have a gopro 3 black edition. The videos I see online have the track map with position tracking and speedo and all kinds of cool stuff right on the video. What are they using to do this and how do I get set up?

The most common/cheapest way to go is Harry's Lap Timer to get some additional info and track map.

I went at it in a more accurate/elaborate/expensive (not really for my Zl1 but for my Lemons team).Below 's my test video (street drive) as a test while I'm in my break-in period with the Zl1. I'm going to clean up the gauges (this was a very quick attempt at creating them, testing). I've got the track map at the bottom and on the DIC, because I also need to test the bandwidth of data I can get out of Torque and my cheap bluetooth adapter. I'll likely replace the track map on the DIC with Boost and throttle position and whatever else seems useful (maybe knock retard) and get the fuel and temp gauges working since they are there.

I'm using:
Qstarz LT-Q6000 lap timer/GPS
GoPro camera
Torque App for Data Collection
Dashware for Video Creation

The Qstarz is a great unit if you need the GPS accuracy it provides compared to a phone to analyze laps, lap segments, and corners (great when multiple drivers share a car, we can learn from each other). If you just want a track map on the video, Harry's Lap Timer or something equivalent is much cheaper for that purpose.

Video itself is boring, just a drive on public roads

I plug mine into the usb port to charge while recording, I have 2 usb ports in the cigarette lighter upfront, and then use the on in the center console.

invest in a GoPro Battery BacPac and/or do as All-American said. I suggest a Skeleton Case as well to keep the temp down on the GoPro as it does turn off it it gets too hot.

This is a good little kit to consider as well as it comes with the proper Amperage car charger: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I2VIR2M I couldn't beat the price for what you get...

So I went the route of MMARX82. Got the track addict app 9$. GoPoint OBD 120$. Skeleton case so I can run USB power 50$. Race Render Ultimate edition 50$. I will need to get a good mount for my iPhone that I can video from probably another 50$. But I plan to have some bad ass videos up after my next track day.

I use http://www.rammount.com/ the external suction cups are rated to 150mph, they work even over the harshes gators strips. The windshield mounts for iPhones etc.. and really good shock absorption. Harrys laptimer will work with external GoPoint ODB and GPS units. It overlays the data/video w/o extra software. But I just bought CMS laptimer, it uses same GPS/ODB inputs and GoPro, but needs the external software as mentioned to tie it all together. Haven't used it yet. The GoPro has better video than my iPhone, and the external GPS is much better than the iPhone. Both Harry's and CMS provide in car feedback on current lap time, predictive timing to show if you are fast/slow than best lap etc... Awesome stuff for a few hundred $$, 5 years ago it would have cost close to $5K

Yep, I use the Ram Mounts as well, they are a far superior product to just about everything. http://www.amazon.com/Ram-Mount-Suct.../dp/B0066BWMNU

If you have any problems feel free to message me.

Got the ram mount. How important is the external gps? Does the phone not do it well enough?

I ended up buying an extra battery. One batt is good for about two 30 min runs. Then I swap batteries for the third and fourth runs. I charge them overnight at the hotel.

The phone will work, but it only gives so many data points per second, the external units provide more points per second with more precision, they use them on private planes etc.. . It isn't a requirement, just depends on the accuracy you are looking for. The iphone will jump from .9G to 1.1G, where as the external unit will plot it all out in smaller increments. My unit uses Blue Tooth, I velcro it to the dash, maybe 2.5" square, .5 high and 1 oz. Charges with USB. I use this one, just be sure it is compatible with the application software. There are others. Dual XGPS150A Bluetooth GPS Receiver

Start with just using the phone and determine for yourself is the GPS is good enough for you. I did buy the external adapter and used it a few times then stopped using it. So if it's not good enough for you I have an external GPS for sale.

For autocross it doesn't matter much since your not going that fast, if your doing HPDE events you might want it. Here is an older video and you can see that the track didn't come out quite right, but also since then the TrackAddict guys preloaded track maps so they are better looking, so again, try it without the GPS device and if your not satisfied then get one.
