So i am wanting to beef my rear end up without dropping the money on a 9". my build plan is to get the LPW rear cover and the JRE billet caps. I am also planning on the detroit truetrac and wanting to get either 3.70 or 3.73 gears. I dont plan on installing the actual truetrack or gears due to the chance to mess it up versus the fact its only a couple hundred at a shop. but i will be taking the pumpkin out and taking it to a shop.
now my main 2 questions are: 1-what is the best gear installment kit that works with the truetrack and doesnt come with a bunch of extra stuff i dont need and fits the right gears? 2-what gear company is recommended for either ratio? thanks guys. im new to the forum and just looking for some knowledge |

When I did mine, I took them a Lingenfelter gear install kit. I also had them replace every bearing and race as I bought a used diff and had that one rebuilt. I doubt you would even need one if you went with the AAM 3.91 since its what GM uses. The best gears out there are AAM for our diffs. Not sure they have a 3.73 ratio.

what makes AAM so good? well i was planning on replacing all bearings and literally everything to include the new gear set-up as well as the truetrac since i have a little over 40k miles on the diff.

AAM is what GM uses for their gears. If its good enough for them, its good enough for me!

I had the exact setup you're talking about except I stuck with stock 3.45 gears. I had them for 811rwhp for 5K miles. Now I'm 1K+rwhp, the rear is still holding strong, but I'm more concerned that it's on borrowed time. AAM or Richmond gears are about the same price, unless you go with GM 3.91, which is a couple hundred less. It's what the 1LE has. Richmond hasn't had the best reputation lately, but since they've gone under new management, product quality has improved. The TruTrac is great, just make sure you use Non-synthetic oil. It doesn't like synthetic oil. As far as gears are concerned, use this as a guideline. If you plan to go FI in the future, stick with AAM 3.70 or Richmond 3.73. They're within the same price range. If you are going to stay N/A, go to 3.91 and save a couple bucks by using the GM gears. If you do 3.91's with an FI setup, you'll have a hard time hooking up the tires. You'll spend more time spinning.

ok thank you for the insight. now you said you made the same setup, what instalation kit did you use? i was looking at the lingenfelter set that costs just about $200. Will that do and is all that necessary or is there a better solution?

Since I used the OEM gears, there was no need for an install kit because nothing really changed other than the posi unit. Although, to be on the safe side, we did change out bearing, seals and other miscellaneous items. If you do AAM, or LPE gear, then use their install kit. Likewise, if you go with Richmond gears, they also have an install kit. I don't think install kits are all that different from one another.

so ordered the truetrac with GM 3.91 gears with the lingenfelter gear installation kit, might be too much but decided would rather make an order once instead of missing a few items. also got the JRE billet caps and decided to get the LPW rear cover just for added insurance. and got a set of BMR bushings for the diff. cant wait for it all to come in. when i make the build ill be sure to post it all.

Dude, that was my exact setup except for the cover! Good taste! Just make sure they ACTUALLY DO mill the endcaps to the proper bore. The guy that built mine charged me for milling the caps, didnt do it, and my entire diff is trash. It ate the endcap bearing at 15mph.
