Z/28 VS. ZL1 Torque News
For more reading pleasure! I am kind of partial to the ZL1, but it's brother is rewriting history. Now what was that rumor of a new Challenger?

Nice read! You would have to be nuts to take a Z/28 over a ZL1.....unless it was strictly a track toy.. even then I'm sure BIG brother Z is right there with little bro.......

I haven't driven a Z/28 yet, but this article sums it up pretty well. These siblings make a fantastic pair and I want to own both of them!
Oh, and throw in a COPO while I'm dreaming...

As a track car, the Z28 is phenomenal. Car and Driver got it around VIR faster than all but nine other cars in their history of doing the event. Faster than any Corvette except the ZR1 with the track package (Cup tires).
Having said that, IMO it's a little bit like having a 9-second Honda Civic; it's awfully impressive, but a fair amount of the 'shock and awe' is that they did it with something not really designed for that application. Also, tires. I'd like to see ZL1 or CTS-V times with Trofeos or Sport Cups. I know they're 'stock OEM', but...UTG 60? I like the Z28. I can't think of any realistically likely situation where I'd pick one over a ZL1. |

Nice. Each Camaro is a winner in its own way. There are no losers. The 1/LE could be the best bang for the buck Camaro in terms of handling, with the Z/28 being the ultimate handling Camaro, and the ZL as being the best integrated Camaro.

The thing about all of these magazine tests is that they have to run the car completely stock. That is fine but almost no one I know that is a regular at a racing venue has left their car completely stock. There are a few but the vast majority make the easy mods that will show gains at the track. Honestly the Z/28 is delivered from GM in a package that is not easily improved, it already has a CAI, racing brakes and racing tires. The engine is going to take some work to make it any faster, headers is probably the easiest mod and the gains are relatively small. ZL1 on the other hand makes great gains with a set of roadracing tires and the engine gains a lot of power with a few simple mods. I put on racing pads, braided lines and racing brake fluid and the ZL1 stops as good as the racing tires can hold. If you get the calipers, rotors and pads to stop the car at the limits of the tires they cant get any better. ZL1 will heat crack the stock rotors but they still are completely fade free with racing pads. My point is the stock ZL1 will not run with the stock Z/28 but with a couple thousand the ZL1 gets a bunch faster... finding where to improve the Z/28 will not be as easy.

I have had an LS7 before. the Z28 with ported heads, cam, longtubes would gain 100-120whp. I bet it would lap very fast and be really fast in a strait line if the rear diffs and shafts would hold up. the thing that sucks is you already paid 75k for the car and I am not sure how the rest of the car would hold up. In my mind that car would be scary fast around a track if the reliablity did not fall apart. nice thing about the Zl1 is how far you can go before you need to upgrade other suporting parts. @650whp the car is still pretty rock solid. I am not sure the Z28 would be.
