I'm not trying to start a another v6 vs v8 forum fight, I bought a v6 because that's what I could afford at 19 which I am paying for myself. Although I do plan on upgrading once I make a little more and have this payed off, but this is a discussion for another day.
My younger brother is getting a new crate 325 put in his car pretty soon and we plan to take our cars to the local drag strip (1/8 mile). His car (automatic) has upgraded exhaust and headers, also a racing shifter but I think that is it. My question is how well would my car do against his?

Once that 325 is installed you will be seeing nothing but truck bed.
Remember, the Toyota Camry is just .2 slower than our v6 Camaros. Your car will last a bit longer if you two keep racing them, though. Lol. |

In my opinion, the best chance you have is that the El Camino may have trouble getting traction due to the light rear end. If he gets it to hook just a bit, he wins.

yeah its hard to say in the 1/4 I would say you have it, because he probably has 3 speed auto with 2.73 gears and 325 ci isn't that a big V8. But you dont need more then 3 gears on a 1/8 mile. hard to say only one way to find out

This is just a guess, but I think the answer is in the transmission. If it's a 3-speed auto, those things are dogs. Foot buried to the carpet, 1st gear covers all the way from a stop to almost 50mph depending on gearing. The question is, does it have enough torque to get out of the hole any quicker than you with a gearing advantage?
That would be a fun run to watch! |

El Camino - 325 HP at the crank, 3 speed automatic, 2.73 gearing (most likely)
Camaro 323 HP at the crank, 6 speed automatic, I forget the gearing but 2.73 also?? It would be close but I give Camaro the win, those transmission are dogs and the torque converters such on them and BIG questions is it carb or fuel injected?

You need to find out more about his build. He's just puting in a crate 350 or is he building it? 2 different animals. A crate or built 350? Because if he's building it a new cam and a machine shop to bore it over he can be at 400hp in a 3,000lb car. Which will murder your v6.

A lot of variables here but I think it will be a good run. Due to the lack of weight in his rear end, I'd give you a slight advantage. Hook 'em up quick and you should win (barely).

'84 El Camino curb weight is right around 3300lbs according to the GM Heritage Center.
On a 2013 Camaro with the LFX, the curb weight is north of 3780 lbs I guess I never realized how much our cars really weigh. Wow. The axle ratio in the 1LS and LT cars is 3.27. |
