Noises

Hi,

As mine is the only Z/28 I have ever driven, I was wondering if some of the noises I hear from the engine bay are normal me hearing them is simply due to the lack of insulation.

There are two specifically:

1. Clicking sound whilst driving that sounds like valve tapping.

2. A general mechanical rolling type noise that sounds like something rotating in the engine. This is most audible in the first couple of gears. The best way to replicate it is by creeping forward and having the car in the wrong gear ... for example if the car is barely moving and I put it in 2nd I can hear it distincly as it tries to get enough rpm for the gear. It goes away if I press on the clutch.

Not sure I explained the second one correctly, but if it's normal I'm pretty sure you will know what I'm talking about.

Thanks.

1. Probably hearing the injectors firing.

2. Transmission chatter.

I hear these too more so since the car lacks insulation.

Hi Bptman from Lancaster Pa. #143 2014 white. Yes the valve train is noisy. Also after a hard drive you can hear the transmission bearings when in neutral with the clutch out at idle. And those big brakes will squeal from time to time at a slow stop. It is good to listen and pay attention to your car when it is new. Develop your baseline of what noise the drive train makes and remember the oil psi at idle at normal operating temp@ 187deg. My car has with m1 5w30 at 187deg. 1.9 -- 2.3 bar at idle. 1 bar=14.503 psi. Also I keep the tire psi at 29--30 cold. When driving they will heat up to 32--33 psi. I like the car at that condition on the street. Just have to watch for the cinders. Sticky tires and small stones equal bad things. Anyway Congrats! on the purchase of your Z28. This car is a real fun car to drive. Enjoy!

Thanks Bptman (and backtotintops) ... you've put my mind at ease.

Knowing (and loving) that part of the appeal of this car is its rough/pure disposition, it's hard to glean what is and isn't part of the normal experience, especially cause I don't have another one to compare it to.

I appreciate all the help.

Also seems like GM has kept true to the Z/28's roots. I swear every time I drive my '69 Z/28 I hear something, but alas it is the guttural aspect of the car.
I can't wait for my new one to show up in the next few weeks, then I'll be able to experience the pleasures mentioned above!

Mine does the same OP. Reminds me of a Ducati with an open clutch cover. People always think it's broken Enjoy.
