Oil filter loosening off

Just wondering if there is anyone else out there in ZL1 land that have had there oil filter loosen off? I just got done going on a longer road trip and when I parked the car in the garage I noticed oil dripping from underneath the engine. I thought oh great, rear seal, valve cover or oil pan gaskets. But no, I took it into the dealership and to my surprise they told me the filter had loosened off and that they have had 3 other Camaro's that had come in with the same issue. They said it was probably from engine vibration at high RPM. Hmmm maybe or I say the service department not tightening them properly. The old saying is, thread it on until hand tight and then give it a 1/4 turn more after that. My concern is "what if" the filter came off while I was driving? Just putting it out there.

That is really weird...
Maybe it is a rookie who is not lubing the seal gasket on the filter, resulting in a less than ideal seal?

The first thing they teach along with adding the new oil into the filter before installing. At least the tech didn't use the filter wrench to tighten it!

Somebody did something wrong I have never had this happen on any vehicle.

I have seen stuff happen that others have done.

double gasket, etc.

chances are they did not lube the rubber seal or they just did not snug it down tight enough.

you lube that oring and snug it right and you usually have to use the wrench to get it off.

I totally agree. An oil filter which I have installed has never "loosened off". I bet the rubber gasket wasn't lubed just as Hognutz stated, or someone gave the filter a limp wristed tightening job. Have you guys ever removed a filter from a new vehicle for the first oil change? The filters are always "gorilla tight". I wouldn't say that is correct, but it would never come off from engine vibrations.

I agree with you both. I have never had a filter that I've put on ever loosen off. I'm just glad I caught it before something catisraphic happened.
