Thumbs down Flat tire: Repair or replace?

Came out this morning to find the rear left tire flat on my 2014 ZL1.
I ran it last night with no issues so most probably its a nail or something.

I called the Chevy Roadside assistance and they will have my car towed to Classic Chevrolet in Grapevine.

I talked to Classic Chevrolet and they can either repair the tire, or replace it with a new one.

My current tires are just 4 weeks old and as new still. So it feels like throwing money down the gutter to replace it with a new tire after such short time, but at the same time it does not feel right to repair it. I guess I don't really know what they do when they repair a tire - is it as good as original?

Any inputs on what I should decide to do is highly appreciated? Repair or replace?

What a beautiful Monday morning it turned out to be!

From Tire Rack

A punctured speed rated tire brings with it additional considerations. While some tire manufacturers "allow" a tire to retain its speed rating if a specified multi-step repair procedure is followed exactly, most tire manufacturers reason that since they have no control over the damage caused by the puncture or the quality of the repair, they cannot confirm that the tire has retained its high speed capability. Therefore, their policy is that a punctured and repaired tire no longer retains its speed rating and should be treated as a non-speed rated tire.

This Monday morning just keeps getting better and better!

I guess I will just replace the tire then.

If they are going to repair it, I will request that they do take the tire off so that we can see what it looks like on the inside and not just put a plug in there without knowing the extense of the damage.

Hey nickswe I found myself in the same situation last week with the drivers side front tire. I thought about replacing the tire but had it repaired instead. The tire was removed from the wheel and repaired from the inside.

A better question maybe to ask is, "How often will I drive my car in which the speed rating of my tires come into play?" Other than highway speeds will you drive your car at speeds of 149 mph or greater (Z - 149 mph and over)?

BTW I am still contemplating replacing the tire. But since the daily temperatures here have dropped below 40F and to avoid cracking I will not be driving my car for awhile so I have to think about it. Your situation may be different.

This is no attempt to hijack your thread.

Thank you very much for your input!

I am too thinking in the same ways as you did. I actually drive my ZL1 as if it were a baby. I think I have spinned the tires like 2 times since I replaced them over a month ago. I see the car as an investment as I am tending to take it with me over to Sweden next spring when I move back home.

So hopefully they can repair it today, and then my plan is to replace the rear tires completely before I head to Sweden with it, as tires in Sweden are double the cost to here. But I will take the old tires with me and use them in Sweden of course.

Thank you again! It calms my nerves while sitting here at the Chevy dealer waiting for it to be fixed.

I had a nail stuck in my tire two days after I bought it. Had it patched and still ran the GYs to the ground patch and all!!! If they had been older yes I would have replaced them all becuz I was wanting the Michelins anyways but it was only two days old.

Thanks for all replies. I had the tire repaired today at a total of 20 bucks.

Story ended happy this time. Knock on wood.

Any reputable shop would patch from the inside anyways. I have never heard of a company just "plugging" a tire and calling it good.

I just had my left rear tire replaced last week due to a nail in it! The Wheel and Tire insurance I bought for 500 dollars back when I bought my SS (Transferred to the Z) has really paid off... this one like the last 3 didn't cost me anything. In fact in the last 5 years, I've only paid for 2 tires due to wear and 1 rim due to cosmetic damage... insurance doesn't cover wear or cosmetic damage.

My dealership said the GY tires were not repairable. Replaced it under the tire warranty I had.
