Randal's Nitrous ZL1

Randal brought his Automatic ZL1 in for a Nitrous Outlet install and a few other upgrades. We are almost finished the project and just wanted to share!

We are also installing a LPE Nitrous Timing Retard Box w/ MSD DIS Tach Driver. Everything is installed with FACTORY style connections for easy maintenance/removal

looking good paul. cant wait for the results. you dont hear about many zl1 customers adding nitrous to the mix. i did witness some of the install mods done to this zl1 by torq and i must say that the install is top notch. these guys know their $hit.

as far as bang for buck how much would the nos kit help on a basic bolt on no tune application? what else is needed and how much for the kit? where do you get the tanks filled?

To do a Nitrous kit PROPERLY it is not cheap. Example, this specific kit has the following add-on's that we feel are necessary:

Bottle Warmers (Brackets or other)
Remote Openers
Nitrous Timing Retard Box

If you get all of these additional parts you are looking at a few days labor to wire everything nice and clean plus a few thousand in parts.

From a bang for your buck standpoint, this is not the cheapest but its unique and will make huge torque

Are those stock wheels POLISHED to a near chrome finish? It's about time someone added a bottle to a ZL1!!!! Can't wait for the results.

I believe they are the Wheel Replica ZL1 replicas. Hopefully the owner will chime in...if not I will find out tomorrow for you. She made just under 500RWHP through the auto on our MD with a pulley and stock airbox with a drop in....picking up almost 35rwhp and 40rwtq....the first time we have not changed out the airbox with a pulley and it really shows the limits of the factory assembly.

Are you going to try it again with an aftermarket I take to compare it to the stock box? I think it would be neat to see if there's anything to be had by modding the stock setup for a stealthy look like guys used to do on the lids of ls1 cars. How much longer before you hit the "HAPPY BUTTON"???

You are correct Paul. The wheels are factory repo from Doug. I believe a half pull was done because injectors ran out. If I remember correctly Paul advised that the car was making 610lb ft tq as low as 3200rpm starting with 30% of the nitrous flowing from a 100 shot.. must upgrade to id850 injectors and a msd booster pump before a full pull can be made so stay tuned. that pull was a 100 shot.....this car is controlled by a progressive nitrous controller.

The goal is to see what can be done with stock airbox and stock exhaust.....I would expect a 5-8HP gain from cutting the bottom of the airbox open. With PD/Roots blowes, reducing restrictions pre S/C is MASSIVE.....and the more boost you make and the more RPM's the blower turns the bigger the bottleneck becomes.

At 3500-4000rpm on a 100 shot she was making over 610RWTQ through the auto on our Mustang Dyno but she is out of fuel and needs an injector/pump upgrade.....even on boost only the injectors were at 100% duty cycle because the pump cannot maintain enough pressure therefore reducing the size of the injectors.

Finally got the Injector Dynamics ID850's and our MSD BAP Kit installed and squeezed it. We decided to keep it at a 100 shot with the stock airbox, stock exhaust and we are really happy with the results

Keep in mind this is through an automatic.

Gains w/ 2.5 Pulley and Spray
190FTLBS
150RWHP

Gains w/ 2.5 Pulley and Tune
37RWHP
54FTLB
We have found this combo really needs an intake to take advantage of the pulley combo.
