Break-in Mods
I've ordered my ZL1 and of course I have a list of mods I want to do but I'm not sure if any of these will affect proper break-in during the first 1500 mi. So, I'm throwing this out to the community for your expert advise (opinions welcome too). Here's the list of mods I'd like to start with:
1. Elite 2 catch can w/check valve 2. CAI intake 3. Headers (Kooks w/high flow cats) 4. Exhaust (SW or Borla Atak) I wouldn't begin to know if any of these would prevent proper break-in as I'm not an engine expert, but I think I know enough to admit that I don't know enough to answer this. Thoughts? |

Great question.
I'm not 100% sure myself as I bought my ZL1 used with 4800 miles.

Only thing I'd be worried about is the headers, but everything else I'd slap right on without having a problem myself. As long as you're still driving without a heavy foot and doing all the right things you would for a normal break in, I'd say you're 100% fine.

On another thread, someone states if you add headers you require a tune. So, guess headers will have to wait. Anyone know more about results of adding headers and needing a tune? I'd guess a tune is always good, but is it required with exhaust mods?

With the cold air intake and the headers good chance you are going to throw a CEL without tune .

Well that kind of sucks. When I do upgrades like this to my motorcycle, Victory offers factory tunes for about $100 and voila, bike runs great and no warranty issues. Why can't car manufacturers do the same? Oh well, gotta break in first then I can unleash the beast.

Just bought mine in Feb and added a catch can and cai (Roto-Fab) - no tune required for those. I do have plans down the road for long tube headers w/hi flo cats but as that will require a tune, I want my warranty to burn in some more before I do this one. As far as a cat back sys, I like the NPP exhaust that comes on the ZL1 and I actually did the fuse pull to keep the flaps open full time (fuse #8 in the trunk). Also will probably do a pulley change too - but that will also be down the road a bit.
Great color choice - I went with the other blue - Blue Velvet Metalic. |

cal45, my bad, I put down wrong color. I am getting the Blue Velvet Metallic, not sure how I got that wrong. How do you like the color? I can't seem to find one in person to see how much I really do or don't like it, I ordered it based on pics I've seen and I always seem to lean towards blue and it was the only choice for the ZL1.
In the end, I'll probably just do the catch can and maybe add a Hurst shifter until I get my break-in completed. As much as I want this to sound awesome, I don't want to damage it in the process. The wait is killing me too, seems like it's taking forever and I haven't even received a VIN yet. ugh!!!!! |

The catch can should be put on first
Tune for the complete package but you won't have a problem adding the rest of the exhaust and the CAI. You're just helping the engine breathe. Plus you're still gonna take it easy on the car while you're breaking it in. Although I'm sure you're gonna either read or hear differing opinions on that and with what I just said. Personally I'd wait to do the headers until broken in and then do that and a tune Congrats on the car Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Awesome pics. I'm going with the black rims myself, love the blacked out look. Are those ZL1 logs on the fender underneath the Camaro logo something you added? Looks awesome there.
Man, now I really can't wait. |

Chevy is not forgiving about mods like your victory they will void the warranty.
