2013 SS are we now at 430HP?
Just wanting to know what you think. We had 426 with a hydraulic steering pump and now have electric. How much would that give us? Also I have read the GM quad exhaust over at some Vette forums have given about 6-8 HP at the back wheels.
So if we have that exhaust also what do you think we have? Just asking since I am bored waiting for my 2013 SS to show up. |

GM has always had a reputation of under rating their engines. You will often see HP increases in engines from GM that go unannounced because of insurance and other reasons.

The rating is at the flywheel. So, neither of those objects would affect the horsepower rating at the flywheel.

Correct. The electric steering pump just decreases the amount of loss between flywheel and rear wheels.

Hold it. On a engine dyno with no accessories the LS3 puts out like 480HP at the fly wheel. The drop on the rating from GM to 426 is due to accessories draging it down. So if we no longer have a steering pump we should have a gain.

When the engine was certified at 426Hp, it was with all pulleys attached. When the power steering pulley is disconnected, and replaced with an electric pump, the load is decreased. When the load on the engine is decreased, the certified Hp will in fact increase. The LS3 without all belts and pulleys, actually produces around 480 Hp. The amount isn't all that great, but there is an increase of power.

So the valve driven exhaust on the corvette is worth HP, but you are saying on a Camaro SS equiped with it that you can nothing over the 426? I would have to believe that their is some gain in it other that just sound or weight vs the stock ones that came on our cars.

Ok... so I think I see what you are saying. Numbers to the wheels may increase slightly, but not change at the engine. What about the new exhaust option? I can't remember what this is good for on the Corvette, but don't they rate it 10 HP higher with that option? Would not the same thing apply here to the Camaro? Maybe not the same numbers as the Corvette, but I would have to think that there is some advantage to going with it other than the sound.

I just checked on Chevy's web site. The optional dual-mode exhaust on the Corvette gives an additional 6hp and 4tq according to the web site. I don't see why the Camaro would not profit the same.
