Onstar - What still works without?

My initial OnStar is about to expire and I am probably going to let it. The lowest I could get on a base plan was 19.99. Funny thing is I called them and mentioned I had the base protection play at 9.99 before but she said they don't offer it. All that is available is 19.99. Today I get an email saying that it is expiring and can get the protection for 14.99. Will see if I can get the same plan before when I did this.

Anyway, does the remote start and unlock via the app still work without a paid version of OnStar? If not, what does still work? If it does, what else can be done?

If you activated your trial (so I'm told) the base functions are available to you for five years. (so I'm told)..

The phone app stops as well as all car functions when your trial period expires. I never hit the blue button again.

The phone app is the best part about it, they know this.

True, at least my 2015 Terrain works that way. Basic includes diagnostics, dealer maintenance notification, and access to RemoteLink app. No emergency or other services.

I don't think so. OnStar sucks.

I think they still function, but it's like calling someone when you didn't pay your phone bill.

Correct, no Emergency, that is a fee. I have it just for the wife. When she travels out of town with the car, she is a "panic'er" and feels better knowing she could get help with that. If it makes her feel better, I'm good with that. So I pay a yearly fee for Emergency/Road Side service for them.

They are okay, but you could get AAA or other services for a little less.

When I decided not to pay for Onstar, I was told ALL features cease, including emergency features, unlock, ect. Think about it, Onstar is a service provider, why should you get services if you're not a paying client?

Not sure about the emergency service but the unlock through the app still works. I know because I used it and it was also advertised to work after disconnect.

Also I received an email from OnStar a few months ago about their new basic plan which is free for 5 years on all 2014+ models. Below is confirmed from their site. Had this conversation with someone else and they said 2015 but once again the email and their site confirms 2014s too. I never called to activate it because honestly I don't care about the advanced diagnostics or the NAV portion. Unlock still works and that is good fro me.

All 2014 and newer GM vehicles come with limited OnStar services standard for 5 years. »

New! The OnStar Basic Plan now comes standard on 2014 model year and newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles for five years from the date of new vehicle delivery. Plus, it is available to owners of eligible pre-owned, 2011 model year or newer vehicles for three years.

You’ve got a powerful connection to your vehicle and the world around you with OnStar Basic Plan1. You’ll have access to limited OnStar services, including select features of the OnStar RemoteLink® mobile app2 that lets you remotely start your car (if factory installed), send a destination to your in-vehicle navigation screen, and lock or unlock your doors — all from your smartphone. You’ll also receive Advanced Diagnostics to help monitor your vehicle’s health and simplify maintenance scheduling. And, if your vehicle is equipped with OnStar 4G LTE3 and a Wi-Fi hotspot4, you’ll have access to a built-in, reliable Internet connection so you can stay connected on up to seven mobile devices.

For full access to our emergency, Advisor-based and other OnStar services, you can upgrade to a paid service plan. To learn more about your Basic Plan, please speak with an OnStar Advisor, or log into onstar.com.
