Thinking about leaving the Fords and getting an SS
Hi all, so I'm thinking about going for a 2013-ish Camaro SS or Mustang GT. The only cars I've ever owned were Mustangs, and I'm on my fourth now. It's a 2003 Mach 1 (it's a 32 valve DOHC, not 16 valve SOHC like the GT) with a Procharger making 448 rwhp. Only 27k miles. I don't have to sell it or anything, it's running great but lately I've had thoughts about just getting something newer.
I LOVE my Mach 1, it's a beast but it's really at about it's safe limit without digging into the motor and it's just not worth it on a 12 year old car. Both the new 'stang and Camaro motors have so much more potential than the old 4.6. Even as it stands, pushing this much power through it makes me nervous every time I get on it. I've got an awesome tune, and it's probably going to last a long time but it's still hard not to worry about a rod ventilating my block. So I guess the reason I'm here is to see if I can be swayed over to the DARK SIDE instead of getting another Mustang. Obviously you guys prefer Chevy. What is it about the 5th gen Camaro that makes you guys take it over the Mustang 5.0? As far as looks go, they're about a wash for me. I like 'em both. |

This discussion/debate has been going on since the cars came out. I don't know what magic statement would sway you. I can only say that is a looks thing for me. Mechanically they go back and forth for dominating performance...excluding tuned cars. However, those basically who spends more money IMO.
For me...it's the looks. Mustangs are good looking cars once you do some work to them IMO. Factory wise the Camaro is a better base to build from looks wise. I think the Camaro is a better looking car and have thought so since my first one back in 93. Good luck and hope we see you join our ranks.

Yeah, I'm not sure a "Chevy Man" or "Ford Man" can ever really be satisfied on the respective dark side. These kind of things are the stuff of legend, family feuds and ostracizing! Until the new Mustang came out, many Fords just looked over inflated. They really refined the new Mustang. Nice lines. So, for me it's look as well. But when it came to muscle car attraction, I have always been a GM man. I'm going to advise YOU to buy a newer Mustang.

OP, buy what you want. You can't go wrong with a modern pony car. They perform at a level that will satisfy regardless of which badge is in the grill.
My only advice is to test them yourself and don't worry about what other people or magazines have to say. You're the one who will be behind the wheel, so in the end it has to be your call. Also, the 4.6 isn't so bad. I happen to love mine.

I was in kind of a similar situation. I came from owning four Mustangs, most recently a '12 and was considering moving over to the dark side, also.
Ultimately, I entertained the idea for two reasons; I was tired of the straight line game and saw that the 5th gen, most notably the 1LE's and newer model Camaros had revised suspension packages that made them no joke in the turns - secondly, I wanted to see what all the hype was about after all these years, when it came to the fabled LS engine. So, I test drove what eventually became my current vehicle. Much to my dismay, I couldn't track down a 1LE that wasn't already a 2SS and they were on production hold until the '15 models were being made so, I entertained this one because of its options. The power was woafully underwhelming. Period. I was expecting something completely different. But I understood that the car was stock and perhaps with a tune and a couple of goodies, it would wake the car up. Also, the 1LE suspension package could be had for as little as $1200 at the time so, it didn't seem so bad. Long story short, I did a couple of mods and generally speaking, I'm content with the purchase but I am by no means whatsoever sold on this platform. Be that as it may, I'll likely keep it for a good long while for financial reasons and nickel and dime a few mods over the years until something else I can't resist comes along.

Don't let anyone "sway" you into anything. You know what you will like, and go with it. I never liked the Mustang, but around 2006 I went out to Vegas and rented a Mustang Convertible and loved it. I was never impressed with the interior before that, but they had just redesigned it. Since they have redesigned it again, I am back to not being impressed with the interior. That is my preference. I tend to put a lot of miles on a car, and liking the interior is very important to me.

Mustangs are a great car, no doubt about that, but I'm all for the Camaro. I test drove a few mustangs before I started looking at the Camaros, and I felt that the Camaro handled better. It could have been a biased opinion because I've always wanted a Camaro mainly because I think they look so awesome.
Personally, every time I see a Camaro, it turns my head. When a mustang drives by, I barely notice. Clearly it's a looks thing for me, that's why I chose the Camaro.

Hi,
I got my SS 1yr ago and was totally open to a Mustang or Camaro. I test drove both and found that as a previous poster said, the Camaro had more in it and better driving feel than the Stang. The interior of the camaro I think is pretty cool but that's personal preference. The price was also higher but it just felt better after driving it. Plus, there were so many Stangs on the road I thought it would be nice to have something a bit less common up my way. I found the handling better and I liked the fact that you sit down low like being in a cockpit rather than sitting "on top" of the Mustang. Just drive both and that is what you should base your decision on because I think both are nice. Ultimately, if I could sum up my experience in testing both: The Mustang felt like a "poor mans" way to get 400hp. I'm not saying not a costly vehicle but it felt inferiorly built (cheaper) than the Camaro to me (the independent rear suspension makes a diff). Good luck J |

I have an F250, so its not a Ford or Chevy thing for me... I was looking at both and then I drove the 2015 1LE 2SS... It was all over...

How much are you looking to spend for this replacement for you old one? Also are you more of a straight liner or do you want handling for twisties? Do you like a light nimble feel or a more luxury car ride?
As a guess with you owning many mustangs (I have too) I would say you would be most happy with a 2010 and up GT500. Thus my first question. You really need to go drive several for more than just the normal trip around the block test drive. |

With the look of the interior and chopped top look....I'll gladly accept the more challenging rear visibility.
