Check your equipment. And then check it again.
A week ago I did the Exhaust on my 2015 1LE.. the Retro Chambered Catback that I picked up on the black friday special...
Great system. Sounds awesome, absolutely love it.. Now the problem. Picked up some ramps and 6 ton jackstands at the local Oreilley. Things worked out fine, had the car up on them at least 4 times during the process.. I also have a smaller set of older jackstands that I put in the front, just used the ramps to get the car off the ground. Fast Forward to two days ago. Working on the son in laws' Tahoe, he needs to get to the starter so we pull it into the garage, jack it up, put the jackstand under it, start to lower the jack and BAM... jackstand collapses. ???? What the heck?? Figure...wow.. must not have had it seated.. well. Jack it up again, set jackstand, check jackstand, start to lower the jack and again... BAM jackstand collapses. WTF??? I was under my car on this jackstand for more than a few hours, and I do mean completely under. If the stand would have collapsed parts of me would have been crushed to about 4" thick. Jackstand is the AC Delco 6 ton. Upon inspection you can see the locking dog sits wonky, it's cocked at an angle and the release lever does not articulate true, it's a very badly made stand... The mechanism is not straight and does not fully engage the teeth. The higher setting seem to engage better for some reason, which, thank god is what I used for my Camaro... the lower teeth, I can lean on the jack stand and wiggle slightly and get it to collapse every time. Holy crap. Used my luck for the week.. I'm going to wrap myself in bubble wrap and not temp fate again for a while.. The employee's eyes at Oreilley were priceless when I demonstrated the collapse, the girl even said her husband has a set of the same ones. These cannot be easily disassembled for maintenance and they don't have the securing pin that you see on some. They weren't cheap, I think $50 or so, but I guess you get what you pay for. I'm going to spend some time and see if I can clean up the pairing surfaces on these so I can build some kind of confidence in them again. Not sure if it's going to be possible. Please check your safety gear, and check it again... Don't need any squished Camaro owners.... |

Someone was looking out for you! Glad nobody was hurt. That could have been a much different story. I was on the edge of my seat reading it.
All the best, Jared Royce 888.308.6007 |

Is the Tahoe heavier than the ratings for the stands?

I'd send a nasty-gram to the company that made that jack stand, and contact whatever government dept does things about that (The Chamber of Commerce?). Getting the word out might have some lives.

This is why I always keep the hydraulic jack under the car in addition to the jack stands....just in case...

Not even close. They're 6000 pound stands. I could get it to repeatedly drop by leaning on it and wiggling just a little bit..
I think the Gross weight of a Tahoe is about 6000 total. The other stand was solid as a rock, but I still put another of my old ones under the frame and left the jack in place. Scary crap... |

I thought I was already paranoid enough, just thinking about "what if" makes me feel claustrophobic There would have been no "hurt", it would have been "dead"...
And yeah. I think a nasty Email to AC Delco is in the works.. |
