Sorry not Saturdays.....Sundays. My bad. I see that gouging private clinic in Toronto got in the crap for offering the shot but then requiring like a $2000.00 membership fee to get it. What a pile of douchebags.

A sign of things to come...two tiered medical service...for those who can afford it. The Minister of Health was on CTV news @ 6PM, she was asked about that, and she kept dodging the question; the gov't damn well knows that's going on, because the clinic has to get authority from the gov't to charge the fee...they call it a membership fee, because the vaccine is free

I'm in law enforcement, and even the Police, Fire, and EMS, in-house clinics have been pushed back another week. Now with a so-called shortage of vaccine, I bet ours will get pushed back even more, I'll find out on Monday. Toronto Fire is already complaining, because they're in the high risk category.

At this point, I'm still trying to figure out how we survived SARS...and the gov't says that they learned a lot from that...Yeah how to be more disorganized than SARS.

Hang in there everyone, things should level off in a couple of weeks; in the mean time remember the pre-cautions: CONTINUOUS HAND WASHING & SOCIAL DISTANCING ARE THE KEY ELEMENTS.

Inmates gets swine shots, guards do not
By Joe Warmington, Sun Media
Last Updated: 30th October 2009, 7:08am

TORONTO — Inmates at Ontario jails and correctional centres will be vaccinated for the swine flu Monday while the guards protecting them have been told their clinics have been cancelled, the Sun has learned.

“This puts us at risk,” says Matthew Duffy, an officer at the Toronto West jail who is a shop steward for OPSEU Local 517 and a “wellness” representative.

“They have told us they are holding a clinic for the inmates Monday, Nov. 1 but not one for us? It’s ridiculous,” he said yesterday.

The decision to take care of the health concerns of the inmates and not the officers is “insulting”, Duffy said.

To suggest the clinics were cancelled because “there was poor turnout” in other years is ludicrous, he said.

“I mean this year there is a pandemic isn’t there?” Duffy said. “It’s a little different.”

And to add insult to injury, he said, the guards will be part of the security of the clinic.

“They want us to help put the clinic on and we are not getting the vaccine?” said Duffy, a 23-year veteran. “We have pregnant women on the job. It’s not right.”

The correctional services ministry could not be reached for comment last night.

A memo sent to staff said the decision to not give flu shots to staff was based on poor turnout in other years.

“While inmates will be vaccinated at all institutions, the decision was made to not hold staff vaccination clinics at institutions this year due to the small uptake by staff in previous years,” says the memorandum from Loretta Eley, of the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

Also, a memo from Nancy Ogden, a nurse adviser in the ministry states, “over the last three years of collecting data on our flu clinics it was identified that in the majority of facilities that conducted flu clinics the employee turnout was poor and some cited this as ‘disappointing’, not cost effective, etc.”

In B.C.’s crowded jails high-risk inmates are getting the shots to better protect the public when they are released, officials said.

Its the flu. If you are a healthy and those around you aren't part of a critical group, wait a week or two. Those at risk can get their shots, and they'll get them faster if everybody else got out of their way. So far the death toll in Canada for H1N1 is less than 100 and I haven't heard an estimate higher than 400 for the entire year, which means there are likely to be fewer deaths by H1N1 than homicide this year. Many of those deaths had other health factors involved. And please please please don't drive to the clinic. Vehicle accidents were responsible for nearly 3000 deaths last year in the country.

I'm doing my part by staying at home reading this forum.

Honestly though I'm surprised how crazy people get over this. (I blame the media mostly.) I have a higher chance of getting killed by a car than this thing. Now people in high risk jobs (EMS, Doctors, etc) should get this vaccine (and all others) but a common person isn't likely to get this. Also if you are a healthy person with no other health issues that might reduce the effectiveness of your immune system your body will most likely fight this off without you even knowing it.

I think those are irrelevant points and comparisons. If this is such a big deal then why are they making it out as one. If it is a big deal its truly showing some serious incompetance in the government as usual. One or the other. The clinic in Toronto charging like 2gs for some membership whatever got in trouble I guess because they are now giving it away. I havent seen our fearless leader "Dolt"on in all of this. Probly hiding like a typical left wing coward or figuring how his party can steal more money from the Ontario taxpayers with this. lol.

It got hyped up when there were a lot of deaths in Mexico in the spring. People got scared and the media picked up the story. Why did people panic with avian flu? Why did they panic with SARS? Because everyone gets a better response from being sensational than being reasonable. H1N1 is no worse than normal flu, there is evidence to support that it may in fact be less dangerous than regular influenza strains.

If there were an actual crisis with severe consequences the country would quarantine itself, all non-essential businesses and services would be halted, and we'd be informed to stay at home as much as possible. Nothing at all close to that has been given serious mention. Gives a bit of insight as to how

And before you go and condemn the Ontario Government, remember that it was a federal contract to produce the vaccine, Health Canada is responsible for delays with introduction of the vaccine, and distribution is largely at a local level.
