Right halo headlamp inop
Hello!
I'm new to this forum but I've been reading off and on since I purchased me 2010 Camaro SS in March. 2 Weeks ago I noticed might right headlight wasn't working, it would flicker briefly when I turned the headlight switch but wouldn't stay on. The Halo was working but not the actual headlamp. So I went to O'Reilly's and bought a new bulb($87 w/ a military discount, Yikes!) Installed the bulb and the same thing, 1 quick flicker when the switch is actuated but it doesn't work. So I thought, well that was a waste of $90 but now I'll take it to the dealership and flex that extended warranty! I go to the dealership and they think it's a bulb. I tell them I changed the bulb and the flickering indicates it's not a bulb, but the signal to the bulb. After 2 hours they decide the internal headlight assembly is faulty, and do a warranty request. The warranty company says they don't cover "headlamps" The service liason explains the headlamp itself is fine, they verified it by swapping lamps, but the internal circuitry for the headlight assembly is faulty. Since the dealership wants to change the headlight assembly because of an internal electrical/circuitry problem the warranty company won't honor it. So my question is, what exactly does the warranty do? I understand that a HEADLIGHT may not be covered, but if "module and electronic servo/transducer and amplifier" cited from: http://www.protectiveassetprotection...Info-Sheet.pdf wouldn't the internal circuitry/electrical issue within the headlight meet the above criteria for a warranty claim? If an authorized dealer has to replace the headlight assembly to adhere to an OEM requirement, why am I getting resistance from the warranty company? If all else fails I'll order a new headlight assembly online I guess? Or attempt the electrical repair myself. I'm thinking with the blink, it is probably a capacitor. V/r Chris |

Talk to someone else at the warranty company and try to explain to them it's not the bulb but the board for the whole light.

I personally think it's the ballast. The flickering and shutting off is a typical symptom of a faulty / bad ballast.

Thanks for the replies. I was going to order a ballast and change it myself, but Chevrolet stepped up and decided to pay for the assembly replacement even though it's out of the manufacturer's warranty period.
Kind of surprising! I appreciate the replies though

Halo Headlight Not Working
I just noticed the right headlamp on my 2011 SS/RS is not working. I swapped bulbs and unfortunately it's not the bulb. The outer ring lights up and the bulb connector looks fine.Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this to determine whether I'll need to replace the whole headlight assy? I noticed the suggestion above to replace the ballast - I'll get someone to help me check to see if there is a flicker when the lights are first turned on -suggesting the ballast may be faulty - later.

Is your halo not working or the bulb?
Either way you won't have to replace the whole assembly. Worst case scenario, you would need new components Nick C.

Take the bad bulb and put it on the side that is working. If the bulb works fine you need a new ballast. If it is still bad, replace it.

+ 1 and so you the ballast is not internal to the head light, its the round thing you see at the bottom of the headlight, there is only one board inside the head light and its 2 resisters for the Halo to work.

Headlight Ballast Replacement
Thanks to all for the fast response! As I said, it's not my bulb - the swap I did earlier proved that.
I did another check and do not see a flicker when switching on the lights, but will assume that the ballast needs replacing. 2SSRS@Gen5diy - thanks for pointing out the ballast location. Can you tell me how to remove the ballast and where to purchase new ballast? First I'm going to check to make sure the ballast is properly grounded once I get in to have a look. I'm guessing that ballast is only required on HID lights due to their much higher voltage. Is this correct? |

I actually had a customer that had the exact same issue on his Buick and the extended warranty, GMPP, did cover the headlamp assembly replacement because it was an internal wiring issue versus a bulb or composite issue. I had to call my local GMPP rep and explain the situation but they did cover it and actually it happened again on the other headlight a few months later and they paid for that one as well. If you have GMPP Major guard I would call them, it's should be covered.

My driver side halo started misbehaving and finally quit. Initially, it would come on when I unlocked the car but then go out when I started the car. Now it doesn't come on at all - ever. Is that related to the ballast? If so, how does one find and replace the ballast?
