Speeding up the Auto

I have seen it in a couple places on the forum but as usual when i actually need to refrence it i cant find it haha. Anyways I have heard on here a couple times something about being able to switch something out on the AUTO trans that stock significantly holds back power and when switched to an aftermarket part it can unleash those extra horses. I no little to nothing about mechanics so i want to say it was something like stall converter or something? I have no idea if thats correct, probably not and i will get flamed for it but whatever. Thanks for the help!

are you possibly thinking about the difference of using the Auto in DRIVE (D) and MANUAL (M) thus putting it in SPORT MODE, which makes it shift at higher RPM's or different shift points?

Torque Converter is what you are thinking of. Also sometimes called a stall converter, there are many manufactures of them. They don't really make more power, just change how the power is applied.

Yes, its the converter.

Getting an aftermarket stall converter (higher stall speed 3200 - 3600) can greatly improve the performance on an auto. You can shave .5 seconds off your 1/4 mile time with just this mod.

I think he is asking about a computer tune? That would be safer than a 3200 stall, which would rip his car apart (kind of anyways).

If you get a computer tune, both your engine's and transmission's computer will get tuned. Your air/fuel ratio, transmission shift points, torque management (big one, that will unleash the beast safely!!!), etc will get tuned for max performance. You can even have the AFm turned off or made to give you better gas mileage.

For someone that doesn't know much about cars, I would say stay away from an upgrade in torque converter unless you plan on doing all out drag racing. Just my opinion.

Plus, if your car has to go to the shop for any reason because of the converter, bye bye warranty! Same with a computer tune, but the tune is much safer, a converter will give you trouble faster than a tune. Stick to the small stuff, cheaper in the long run.

the difference is the stall or when your car will take off either 3200 rpms or 3600 rpms

basically punch it watch your rpms climb and hold on when it hits the stall which ever you choose, i would go with 3600 but streetablity is a personal preference lol

a computer tune also voids the warrenty? really?

anyway, where do u get this tuned? just find a local professional car tuner and bring it and tell him to tune it so it has better preformance? or what exactly would i tell him to tune specifically (list all things i would need) ... sorry but i dont know much about this stuff

my car definatly needs some tuning or something, i have an l99 and im running a 0-60 of 5.5 at best, thats terrible for the SS, its almost a full scond slower then it can be (granted i live in tampa fl which has terrible humidity and heat which takes off probably a half second)

A tune will void the warranty if the tune is determined to cause the "issue" you have it in for.

There are plenty of car computer tuners in FL. I think FasterProms is the closest to you. They post here often. And do great work and you would not need to ask or tell them anything cause they'll ask you all the right questions.

call them http://www.fasterproms.net/contact.html
