Brake and clutch issues after track night

So long story short, because of a looming rain storm i only got in 55mins of track time in tonight 2x20mins and 1x15mins for the last session. each session had 20mins in between, after the last session which was 15mins, i shut down my zl1 and gave it ~5mins to cool off before driving home. As i went to stop at the exit the pedal went to the floor, i got some abs but barely stopped before rolling out into the main road. clutch at the same time was stuck at the floor with about 1" of travel for the entire pedal. i gave it a few minutes, pumped both pedals several times and everything was fine. i had no noticeable brake fade on the track. . .so what gives? should i not let the car sit? should i let it sit for longer if im going to shut it down?

dunno, never had that happen.

But FWIW I always drive around unoccupied sections of paddock or on the access roads for a few minutes after pit-in to help cool things off a little further than you get with half a "cool-down" lap.

Are you still running stock brake fluid? Sounds like you boiled it.

Bleed the fluid with a race capable DOT 4, 99% bet your problem is solved. How old was it and what fluid is in it?

I think this also,
talked with guys doing tech last weekend. They have failed new cars before less than 1000 miles for too much moisture in fluid.
BMW club recommends changing fluid 1month prior to events

fluid most likely boiled so upgrade the fluid to a Motul 600 or equivalent and see how it performs. My bet is it will be perfect and the pedal will be a non issue.

Thanks everyone. I had suspicions i boiled the brake fluid, it's dot3 with about 5k miles as far as I kno. Thought it was odd it happened after I got off the track. I plan to have brake fluid changed to Castrol SRF and have ss lines installed before the next event. That was scary enough trying to stop from 20mph.

DOT 3 on a road course is a death wish waiting to happen. Even your owners manual says to remove it and those things never get anything right. Be happy it happened where it did and not on the end of a high speed straight. I change mine either every or every other event depending on how hard I run it. Some say overkill but I've never had a single problem and it's cheap insurance when you consider what your car and your life is worth.

Even with RBF600, I'd still do at least a couple minutes of slow speed driving immediately after pit-in just to keep a little airflow going through the rotors and around the calipers instead of just letting everything heat-soak.

I agree Norm and do the same. Lets the coolers do their thing and gets air across the hot bits before stopping. Although with my oversized everything its mostly just for brakes now since fluid temps stay chilly.
