Howling from rear on acceleration at speed

2012 2LT/RS Auto

Getting a howling from the rear on light engagement/acceleration at speed. So, imagine your coasting with foot off gas on a slight decline (so no need to keep on gas to keep at speed). As you come to bottom of hill you just start to engage on gas again, there is an immediate howling from the rear, getting louder now that it's cold here in New England (or just coincidence perhaps that it started past few weeks). If you let of gas, noise goes away about 2 seconds later. Unsure if it's the gears or bearings, how can I tell?

Bearings generally rumble rather than howl when they begin to go south...sounds like a lawn mower engine at low rpm.

I would start by checking for evidence of a leak in the differential, and then the oil level in the differential.

How long have you had this car?

Agree this is where I would start. Years ago, started hearing a 'howling' type sound on my old Silverado; turned out I had a leak in my differential and had lost a lot of fluid. Replaced the gasket and no more 'howling at the moon'

On road since 9/2011. Now 76k. Just changed the fluid, easier than I thought it would be. About a quart came out, give or take, didn't measure it. Put in a bottle of Mobil-1 75w-90 and just started to dribble out top hole when bottle was just about empty. Noise still there.

Louder now, interesting. Wondering if it's the driveshaft bearing? Thoughts?

Center support bearings have some known problems in our cars. And the quality of most of the bearings used in these supports are not all that great.

Ok, thanks, will check that out. It's definitely getting worse with miles.
