when to replace rear shocks?

hello everyone.. when can you tell that the magnetorheological shocks are failing? ..70,000 miles on my ZL-1 and im way to vague on my senses to notice any performance issues. i've noticed some dry caked-on layers of greasy oil around the base of shocks indicating i might have blown seals.. sometimes a bang noise coming ftom trunk area when i go over square edege bumps or pothole. otherwise seems to handle fine. are they crazy expensive? can they be swapped out without specialty tools? thanks for the help!

The lowest price I've seen on rears are around in the low $400.00 range.

They can be changed out without special tools.

The fluid is the consistency of water. If you have a leak, you can tell by lifting the car. The dust shield and strut body separate when the car is lifted. If the covered portion of the strut is dry, the oil at the bottom came for somewhere else.

Check them out and let us know what you found.
