Windshield Rock Chip and Rain

Hello all,

I recently got a small rock chip on my windshield. The chip was a little bit smaller than a dime. I got it repaired by Safelite two days ago. They did a pretty good job, but the resin is still somewhat visible. The glass is smooth to the touch on and around the repair. I drove through a rainstorm tonight and the water was beading weird on that part of the windshield. The water seemed to be attracted to a drink coaster sized area around the repair. I do not have any kind of rain treatment on my windshield to my knowledge. Does anyone know if Safelite uses some sort of solvent on the area around the repair/ sands the area down/ etc? I'm hoping this is a temporary issue, but I would like to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience.

Thanks,
Matt

It is possible that they didn't let the resin "bake" long enough. Meaning, they could have repaired the windshield, and just kept your car in the shade the whole time. UV light (sun) has to dry the resin completely. Doesn't take long, but it's possible they didn't let that happen. Another thing is when they drilled into the windshield, they may have drilled through both layers. Very rare and have to not know what you're doing, but I've seen it happen. Rub your finger across the impact point where they drilled on the inside of the cab and see if it's rough or not. If you feel a hole or indention, they went too far and there could be more issues. If it doesn't stop in the next day, I would take it back to them to have it repaired. If they don't attempt to repair it because it could "break more" then tell them you want a new windshield at their cost lol.

I do glass for a living, 24 years. What you're seeing is the glass is cleaner where the repair was done. After the resin is cured you scrape the excess resin off with a razor blade. Over time you windshield will end up with a light layer of sediment and it will go away.

Same thing happened with my Silverado. It goes away after time.
