Anyone driving their Camaro to see the eclipse?

There will be a total solar eclipse on Aug. 21 covering the entire US mainland. I am hoping to drive my Camaro down to the KY-TN border that day to view the eclipse. I may get stuck taking our Odyssey depending on who else wants to tag along but the Camaro seems more fun!

Anyone else planning a trip for the eclipse? What spot have you picked out?

YES! We're staying w/a friend in Greenville South Carolina. Can't wait. I slept through
one that came over Birmingham (around 11am) in 1984 and have been pissed about it ever since. Not this time.

I thought about it, but from beginning to end the eclipse will take ~4 hours.
And it's a 7 hour drive from here to the center. So an 18 hour day if I don't stop for meals.
And since no one wants to go with me (it's a workday).
And we will have ~88% here.
I'm just going to stay home.

Uh, check with your local astronomer, it will NOT cover the entire US mainland. At least in totality. I'm too lazy to post the path but you should not be too lazy to look it up. A total eclipse never covers an entire mainland. Just sayin. (Unless you're a small island)

Think I'll take my DD as I hear estimates that nearly half a million people are heading into Wyoming from the south. Wyomings population will double on that day. I may have to be in my car for awhile.

Don't need to take a trip to see it. Live right in the middle of where it's happening, on Lake Greenwood SC. Taken the day off and getting some friends together for a pontoon boat party in the middle of the lake. YeeHa

Me too. I live smack in the middle of the path so my Camaro will be in the garage. I had a woman I don't know contact me about spending the night already. Lots of people renting tent spots on their yards here to out of towners.

Oh...
That's right. Some places will only have 60%.

https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-maps

In fact, to actually see it in it's totality you will have to be in Carbondale, IL.

Lazy? Man, that hurts...

Yes, you are right - I should have said the zone of totality (where the eclipse is 100% coverage) stretches across the entire US mainland. It's narrow. Oregon to South Carolina. I've got a spot picked out about 3-1/2 hour drive away.

The entire US mainland will be able to see at least a partial eclipse though...

www.eclipse2017.org if you want to see the path.

In fact, to actually see it in it's totality you will have to be in Carbondale, IL. Which, incidentally, will be the center again on July 2, 2019.
Carbondale is the longest total time at 100% eclipse but where I am headed is only 7 seconds shorter...

Well I will not be driving to see it. I will be sitting in the yard watching with both of my Camaros. Close enough. Monroe NC.......

As for you guys saying you saw the last one (total eclipse)......Not,,,,,Not unless you are over 100 years old......Sorry

6/8/1918
A nationwide band of totality stretching from the SW corner of Washington, through Denver, the Tulsa/OKC area, Jackson MS, the panhandle of FL, and Orlando.
9/10/1923
Only visible from the far SW beaches and a couple of the offshore islands in California.
1/24/1925
Northern MN, WI, and MI, and about half of NY (NYC was split in two by the path!), plus pieces of PA, NJ, and CT.
Read the New York Times articles about the 1925 eclipse, courtesy of Michael Zeiler!
8/31/1932
Maine, NH, VT, and the far eastern coast of MA.
2/4/1943
Alaska only
7/9/1945
Our "Victory Eclipse" was visible in ID and MT only, in the early morning.
6/30/1954
From northern NE, through the western tip of Michigan's UP. Minneapolis was in the path. Early morning.
10/2/1959
Massachusetts only, just at sunrise.
7/20/1963
Alaska got a good show, and Maine was the only other state to see totality.
3/7/1970
From central Florida, the path hugged the eastern coast of the US up through Virgina's Eastern Shore.* This may have been*the eclipse that Carly Simon was referring to in her 1972 song "You're so vain". ("You flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia - to see the total eclipse of the sun.")
7/10/1972
Northern Alaska only.* This might also have been*the eclipse that Carly Simon was referring to in her 1972 song "You're so vain".** (see above)* They were both visible from Nova Scotia!* (The song came out in December of 72, so it's unlikely that it was this one, but hey - you never know!
2/26/1979
WA, OR, ID, MT, and ND were the only states to see totality, in the mid-morning.* It was cold and dreary, and unfortunately many people did not see the eclipse due to rain.
7/22/1990
This one only touched four small islands in the Aleutians, in the late afternoon:* Atka, Amlia, Seguam, and Amukta.* From reports we've read, the day was rainy, and unfortunately no one saw the eclipse from US soil.
7/11/1991

I'll be checking it out here at home .Hoping for good weather . Should be about 75% of totality . Hopefully I'll be still kicking in 2024.I'll be 63. That eclipse will be 100% here
