Dimple Headers on Car??
Hey guys, just throwing it out there.
Have any of you dimpled your header while it is installed on car? My issue is passenger side frame rail. 2nd tube is quite tight (maybe 16th of an inch), so on most left hand turns it will touch, rattle or clunk etc.. I thought of moving motor over some but I am good on drivers side but not by very much and don't think it is a viable solution in my case. I will unbolt and uninstall all if I really have to but to be honest, my C5 friends who say header install is easy must have some dainty hands because I beat my hands and arms up something awful and I have done many 2nd gen headers so I know tight!! (that being said anyone can installing their headers and should, it isn't "easy" but it is straightforward, simply frustrating and in my case, painful (i love it!) . Hence I hope someone in the community has done this while still on car.Thanks for any ideas kids. |

What brand headers do you have?
I’ve had Kooks headers on and off my car and a friends car multiple times with no issues. They’re close to the steering shaft but are far from touching or rubbing anywhere else.

I have a set of 2" TSP's that are not dimpled. I didn't even remove the steering knuckle to install them.

My Kooks headers go in and out with ease, not close to anything at all! Dimple if you have too, it wont hurt anything.

Yep, I've dimpled headers before to clear the steering shaft. There is a video out there of engine builders beating the crap out of a set of headers (on purpose) and the engine only lost 1hp. Don't be afraid to do it if necessary.

I just installed 1 7/8" long tubes, and had the same problem. Especially on left turns. There was a little less than a mm of clearance to start with. No dimple necessary, really. Just put a pry bar on it, and bend a little. Only about 5mm clearance now on mine, so didn't need to pry/bend a lot. But after bending it just a little, the knocking, banging around, and rattling is gone. |

Your fine Zinger. Just make sure you give yourself enough dimple to clear. You dont to be doing it again.

Thanks all for the replies folks;
Regarding the poster who spoke to just using a pry bar, can you go into a bit more detail how you did it? I thought of this exact thing but if a fella prys them from the bottom will it bend and put pressure where I want? I keep being scared it will put pressure on the header bolts only. My issue sounds exactly like yours: soft motor mounts, motor not centered. |

What brand of headers did you buy? Depending on who made them they may send you a new set so that you don't have to dimple them.

Lol, free horsepower. All LT brands have this issue, you are going to need to adjust the engine via the mounts. I am going to hammer my LT headers now. I wonder if I have to get the car retuned. Lol.
