solenoid problem

I have a 2011 camaro ss 6 speed....
I know there is a skip shift solenoid but it has only came up a hand full of times since i bought my car... this past week a lot of times my car will lock out 2nd and 3rd so I can only from 1 to 4..... and other times it shifts fine.... is the skip shift solenoid bad??? If so how hard to replace.... Or is it something else.

I know about the skip shift I have had the car for 7 years and seen the 1-4 shift pop up had full of times not very many.... now the 1-4 shift sign/light doesn’t come on but still locks 2nd and 3rd And has been happening few times from work for multiplied days.... haven’t really had this happen.... so if it’s the skip shift why is it happening more now? Will the eliminator correct the problem

It is CAGS (Computer aided gear selection) AKA skip shift.

If you are under a certain percentage of throttle (I can't remember at the moment) the car's computer makes you go from 1-4. It is for MPG purposes. If you are driving spiritedly, it allows 1-2.

You can buy a skip shift eliminator that plugs inline with the wiring to the skip shift solenoid or you can have it tuned out via HP Tuners, EFI Live, and others.

This is from a 2005 Corvette owner's manual and is likely the same or similar for our cars:
One to Four Shift Light
(Manual Transmission)
When this light comes on,
you can only shift from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4)
instead of FIRST (1) to
SECOND (2).
You must complete the shift into FOURTH (4) to turn
off this feature. This helps you get the best possible
fuel economy.
After shifting to FOURTH (4), you may downshift to a
lower gear if you prefer.
Notice: Forcing the shift lever into any gear except
FOURTH (4) when the 1 TO 4 SHIFT light comes
on may damage the transmission. Shift only from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) when the light comes on.
This light will come on when:
• The engine coolant temperature is higher than
169°F (76°C),
• you are going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and
• you are 21 percent throttle or less.

Its normal on these rides. Unless you surpass a certain RPM, the stock system will not allow you to shift from 1st to 2nd... and you have to shift to 4th. For fuel economy if I recall correctly.

Tune it out, or get a Skip Shift Eliminator to avoid this from happening all together. Then you'll be free to shift to whatever gear you want.

It’s might of gotten hot and is malfunctioning. It’s summer time and the skip shift is right there with the tranny and exhaust pipes, plus you’ve had it down there for 7 years.
I would buy a new $30 skip shift and see if that takes care of the problem.

I got my skip shift eliminator for $12 off amazon. Very nicely built piece. There’s definitely something wrong with your car but $12 is a cheap possible solution.
The solenoid engaging without the display makes me wonder if the computer is actually commanding it to turn on or if its turning on by itself? Have you taken a look at the wiring?

The throttle position criteria for it to activate is less than 30%.

The skip shift eliminator will only prevent the car from throwing up an error code when that cable has been unplugged from the solenoid in the transmission. Same with programming it out. If you don't get the skip shift indicator on the dash it sounds like the solenoid or mechanism that locks out 2-3 in the transmission is the problem.

I tuned it out with my Diablo Intune... never popped a code, never installed a Skip Shift Eliminator. CAGS is gone completely. No indicator light, no codes, just shifting like butter - any gear I want, at any time.
