Drag racing wheels pricing????????????

How long before companies offer drag wheels for our cars that are in the affordable category. I know the responses will be you get what you pay for but right now the only options out there are $3000 for just wheels. When you look at every other drag wheel that fits the stangs as a comparable it is 3 times in some cases. I am waiting to see what comes available before Spring and hopefully there will be more options. Its not that I won't pay $3000 if this was the norm but this seems high for soemone who just wants to run their car for fun at the track. I guess like everything else on our cars is their just so new with few parts to choose from that pricing can only come down when more companies enter the market.

Unless, you are really need the extra .03 gain for the fronts, you really just need the rear rims.

I'd give Steve a call:
SJM Manufacturing Inc.

He is SJM on this site. The advice alone is worth the call.

I have looked at SJM wheels and they are $3000 a set and I have 21" wheels so I need all 4.

If you need to pinch pennies, then look for used Corvette rims. They seem to be the best bargain out there. Other than that, true drag rims are expensive.

Another alternative - you can get some American Racing 18"x10" that will clear your brakes. They run in the $205 - $245 range.

Its not that I am penny pinching as I have over $25k invested so far over what I paid for car. I am just not looking to be a full time drag racer and want a set of wheels with drag radials I can swap out and drive to the track and do some runs on the weekends. So I am just looking for some affordable good quality wheels/tires to fit my needs. You mentioned the American Racing wheels, are they direct bolt up or do they require spacers and what size tire can you run on them?

jrpxxii, If you find some reasonably priced 18x10 drag wheels, what will you run for rubber.

20" Nitto's Drag Radials are about $280 each. Those replica Chrome wheels 20x9's $240 shipped each. Fellow Camaro5 member went low 11's with them , can't be all bad. That's the route that I am going.

Hey jrp -

Check this out:

Beyern does factory wheels for BMW.
These are 18"x9.5" with a 5x120 mm bolt pattern and a 45 mm offset.
(Factory rear offset is 40 mm on a 9" width, so looks good).
The biggest tire you can fit on these is something like an MT P305/45R18.

You can get 'em even cheaper for $209 each at 2kracing (just add the www and .com) I checked on the American Racing and they would need spacers since they don't really support a true 5 x 120 mm for most of their wheels.

Hey Speedster, thanks for the info but the link in your post shows error so I don't know which wheel you are talking about. So you are saying these wheels will be a direct bolt on with no spacers? I like the sound of these but if you could reply with which wheel it is I can look at them and possibly order. What are you thoughts of doing this setup front and rear so I can rotate? I have the factory 21" wheels and am not sure if I need to go with a smaller setup for the front or if this will work without sacrificing much.

Hey jrp -

Try this. Just pick one of the rims with 9.5" width and 45 mm offset.
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/wheels/beyern/size/bySize.do?wd=18&bp=5|120.0|4.72&rw=-1 (If for some reason this link does not work, just go to Discount Tire and click on search by brand. Then put in Beyern. Then click on 18", any width and 5-120 bolt pattern.)

Based on the dimensions you should NOT need a spacer. It should clear the brakes. But, just to be sure I would call Discount Tire.

You don't need to mess with the front wheels at all. If you are really concerned about the looks, then you could get a narrower set for the front, but I guarantee you will not be running 305's on the front...lol..
