Dead Battery?
OK so I put the Camaro into storage about 3 or 4 weeks ago and I went to go do my final storage preps putting rags in the intake and exhaust put plastic underneath the car. Take the battery out!!!! Anyways I was wondering if anyone else had a problem with short battery life. I remember being gone for 4 months with an older car and the battery didn't die on me.

Lots of electronics in cars these days compared to years ago. And these electronics run 24/7 with power from the battery. (ie security, door locks by fob, settings etc.). The cars today are only designed to sit for 3-4 weeks without having to boost the battery to start. You may luck out longer or shorter. But that's just the way it is. If you have unsuspecting draw from a mod or whatever, the life of the battery obviously decreases.
Why not just put a battery tender on it for the storage period.....works for me

I want to put a trickle charge to it but the storage unit does not have a outlet. I guess I am just going to have to deal with it. Now i just am wondering if it is worth taking the battery out if it just going to die on me.

trickle charger is a couple of amps charge that stays on 24/7 If left unattended for too long, it can overcharge or even boil dry the battery
a battery tender with float mode, is the best way to maintain your battery. A 200 to 300 milliamp float charge prevents sulfation by keeping it charged, and it switches to normal charging mode and turns on and off automatically Do NOT get a trickle charger Only use a battery tender

Going to try the battery float charger but not 24/7. Just maybe one day every two weeks.

My first sports car was a '80 vette (didn't buy new) it had a 2yr old battery in it when I bought the car. During the duration I had the car, all I ever did was disconnect the negative terminal. Once spring came around I connected the terminal, turned the key, and she started without any issues.
Yes todays cars have a lot more electionics, but the batteries are much stronger too. Each person has a preference for winter storage, just try different ways, and see which works best for you. |
