Post Top Gear Coverage

I love Top Gear, despite their loathing of American cars, so it was fun to see this on the front page of topgear.com today:

http://www.topgear.com/content/news/stories/3089/

Cheers!

Cool. I don't mind Top Gear bashing American cars. They bash just about anything, and Clarkson is one of those people who is so good at words that he makes you feel good about him putting you down.

"But hell, it looks great. As Hammond said, if <it> drives even passably, it's a tempting proposition"

Well, Hamster wants a go. No doubt Jeremy will have SOMETHING to say about it, now!

What's that quote..."I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right."

I'll be looking forward to seeing this episode. Then again they'll probably run it against an M3 and loose to it by not going full throttle in the camaro.

they do bash all brands, that's why I love the show

unfortunately all the american car shows are so heavily sponsored that they can not really say what they think about cars, therefor I don't watch them anymore, they remind me of a 30-60 minute infomercial

Hence why I'm really not looking forward to the American version. Leno should have and would have hosted it, but he turned it down because being sponsored, it couldn't be objective. What a shame. Usually I'm against public funding for stuff, but when its public funding of turning cars into space shuttle replicas and launching it, throwing cars off a cliff and shooting them on the way down, racing boats, trains, and planes in supercars, and burning rubber around a track in a "reasonably priced car", then shoot, I'd be much more willing to fork over my tax dollars.

Sorry, but the American version hasn't got a chance at being anything other than an overly regulated, PC informercial, IMO. Boring. Not worth the time.

Jay could do a show on his own that would be as entertaining without needing to follow the same formula. However, the lawyers and censors would never allow it to happen on normal TV. It would have to be privately-produced and aired on PPV like Howard Stern. Too bad.

Well, if they are running it against an M3, then it at the very least it will be a very close race around their track since the V8 did do a better time in the "Ring". I wouldn't be surprised if they bring out the Porsche Cayman S as well and have a three way. I'm hoping they throw in and race an SRT8 and Mustang GT against it but it is doubtful they will do that at first since they like to go against the norm.. There is no doubt in my mind Jeremy will prefer the M3 or Porsche over the Camaro but in the end say it is still a fantastic car that can't be matched for price but go on a talk about how it doesn't feel as refined as the BMW or Porsche with a few lazy American jokes thrown in there..

I agree that an American equivalent will never be objectively produced. However, with the BBC version covering all car types, there is not really a huge need for it. Plus, much of the success of the show is due to the personality of the hosts, the humor and the writing. I think it would be hard to get on public television, and most likely too obscure to do well on cable.

I'll just enjoy the BBC version for now.
