mufflers

Would it make a difference just cutting off the rear mufflers and put in a straight pipe? it would shave off 43lbs

Living in CA I think you'll have to weld them back in come inspection time won't you?

Yes, I can just use a coupler to bolt them back on.

Yea it will make a difference. Not huge though, but maybe enough to satisfy you. Most of your sound reduction is coming from the cats. If an L99 you also would have that center resonator that cuts sound down a bit too. LS3 doesn't have that as it is a true H pipe.

I didn't notice a huge increase when I went from the standard cats to HFs. At least not huge to me anyway. After I got my LTs I removed that center resonator and added in an x-pipe and that made a significant increase in sound output. It does have some rasp but I can live with that. Granted, I also do not have mufflers Its great remote starting the car in a parking lot when people are behind it. LOL

No annual visual inspection in CA. Just a bi-annual smog check, and they don't care about mufflers.
I haven't had mufflers for 3 years in my cammed ride. I live in LA and drive about 30,000 miles per year. I've never had a problem. My car is pretty loud.

I thought California just passed some crazy law (shocker I know) about noise issues with anything other than stock exhaust basically being illegal. There was a thread on here a few months ago about it.

Yes CA do pass a crazy noise law, but despite all the news coverage the police aren't really enforcing it. I even got a speeding ticket at the beginning of quarantine and expected to get a noise violation with it, nope. Actually I have been pulled over twice in the last year but no noise ticket.

I really think it's just up to the individual cop and his mood that day.

I live in Florida and got pulled over last year for my exhaust by a State Trooper. Longtubes, X pipe/no cats, and Flowmaster Outlaws. I wasn't even cammed at that point yet. Anyhow, he straight out told me he has a hard on for loud cars (not in those words of course). He didn't give me a ticket, which is really strange for the Highway Patrol, but just a verbal warning. Pretty much a 'Try and keep it down' warning. He also said I rolled through a red light on a right turn, but Troopers rarely ever give moving violation breaks, and it was total BS anyway...he mentioned it at the end of the conversation nonchalantly. I figured he just needed some reason to pull me over. The whole thing was a very weird experience.

Florida is like the wild west when it comes to car modifications and safety, as pretty much anything goes. I feel for you CA guys. I could never deal with that nonsense.

Its funny you said this. The other day I was on my way home from work when a sheriff deputy was behind me. He followed me for a while and I kept it right about 5 over. I hit 6 over briefly and the lights came on. This old guy gets out walks up to the window and tells me, "I got it, its fast and will go but try to keep it at the speed limit you're in a 45mph zone." At that point he just turns and walks off. No ticket or anything. I think he just wanted a closer look at the car lol.
