3.6l V6 Rocker Arm Noise?!
So this is my first time posting to the tread.
I have a 2012 3.6l V6 manual and I recently swapped timing chains (They needed it). What I am hearing now seems to be another noise coming from the valve train...possibly rocker arms? The cams didn't show any wear or damage, and the engine has been kept under maintenance. Every 5k oil change with full synthetic. It currently has 105k miles total on the vehicle. The video is in the link. If anyone has an idea of what it is or where to start please let me know! Oh also, The engine start up and warmed up temp there is no noise. The noise only happens when I press the gas pedal at 1500rpm and up. No mods, all stock camaro. https://youtu.be/J9ADUN-7d5A Thanks! Nick |

There are no rocker arms in your quad cam engine.

Call them what you will, but there are rockers arms, pivoting on lifters in the LFX (single units rather than a shaft). Did the noise only start after the timing chain install? Did you do the install or a mechanic/dealer?

The noise was apparent with the timing chain. My hope was the timing chain was the only issue. I did the install and i checked timing multiple times to make sure i didnt mess it up

Did you just change the timing chains, or did you also do the chain guides and tensioners?
If the chains were noticeably worn, maybe needs timing gears too. |

Timing chains, tensioners, guides, sprockets (not the cam sprockets tho they didnt look worn).

Actually the cam sprockets may be more vulnerable because they are small and the load on each tooth is high. When replacing the chain, all sprockets should be replaces as well. |

So just an update after some time in the garage going through possible issues:
I ran the vehicle with the valve cover off on the left bank where I heard the noise. Ended up being I have 2 hydraulic lifters that are starting to fail on the two middle exhaust cam lobes. I bought new hydraulic lifters for the whole engine and I am going to swap all of them out while I have it apart. I am replacing the sprockets as well per recommendation. Thanks for the help everyone. |
