Need advise on dealer mishap

When I purchased my 2011 2LT RS the spedometer lens had scratches on it but the dealer agreed to replace the cluster. In the course of performing that work they scratched/gouged the plastic on the top of the upper steering column shroud (probably when removing the cluster bezel). Does anyone know how that upper shroud comes off? Does it just somehow snap off of the lower cover or is there disassembly of something involved? I would have them replace it if I was sure there was no risk of aditional colateral damage. Just to be clear, I'm talking about the black plastic cover on the top of the steering column between the steering wheel and the instrument cluster. Thanks...

Yes- this cover comes off and is bolted to the bottom piece that is under and behind the steering wheel. I took it of when I did the HUD install. You may want to look through that thread (very long) as it should show you how it can be done. It may require taking off additional parts including possibly the steering wheel, but it's all pretty easy.

Call GM get a case number, take it to a better dealer, they will fix it.

If you are talking about the black rubber flap that goes between the gage cluster the steering column its a piece of cake It has small tits on the bottom side that fits into holes and grooves & the piece just presses in.
I still would have them replace it seeing how they damaged it ,let them do it over and over again til they get it right. If you are talking about the gage cluster outer trim that goes around the gages I can see how that can easily be damaged as you have to be really careful not to scratch or break it during removal and re-install.I used screwdrivers and a putty knife with three layers or blue painters tape over the ends of them and was very careful.Had it off three times and did not scratch or break any thing.Apparently they were just not being very careful.Good luck, thats why I do a lot of stuff on my car myself. You just cant trust anyone hardly anymore to do it right the first time.
No pride in workmanship to a large extent anymore in the good old U.S. !
Close enough is quite often the goal and these types of outcomes are often the sad results.I hope you have a good outcome with this.

Yes, I think the "pride in workmanship" comment is absolutely correct. The part I am speaking of the the hard black plastic shroud around the steering column, there is an upper and lower. The ignition cylinder and turn signal stalk (multifunction switch) go through it, between the upper and lower section. They scratched the upper shroud. I've been able to find the instructions for removal and apparently you have to remove the cluster bezel to do it -- I just don't know. They also made a very small scrape on the dash at the bottom left corner of the bezel. It is hardly noticeable but my fear is based in knowing how much worse it could have been. Is is worth having them replace that shroud knowing that if they do any damage to the dash surfaces there is no remedy sort of replacing the dash. Sometimes the cure can be worse than the malady.
